This study aims to examine the effects of group art therapy on self-differentiation and emotional crisis in
middle-aged women by providing the group art therapy to those living in D city. We formulated two
study questions : First, does group art therapy influence self-differentiation in middle-aged women? Second,
does group art therapy alleviate emotional crisis in middle-aged women? To answer these questions, we
implemented a group art therapy program consisting of 12 sessions, each lasting 90 minutes, three times
daily, from March 11 to 14, 2013. To verify the sessions’ effects, we employ self-differentiation and
emotional crisis scales to the experimental group and the control group both the pre- and post-test. The
data were analyzed using SPSS WIN 18.0. In addition, the experimental group took the K-HTP test, and
the results were analyzed comparatively. After verifying homogeneity between the experimental group and
the control group, we conducted the t-test for each participant. We found that the program positively
influenced self-differentiation and emotional crisis in the experimental group. The experimental group
indicated better self-differentiation and lower emotional crisis than did the control group. The results implies
that group art therapy has positive effects on self-differentiation and emotional crisis in middle-aged
women.
