The purpose of this study was to analyze the research trends in parent education programs including program development. This study reviewed 178 studies which wer e conducted during 1984-2013. The major results were as follows. First, with regards to research on parent education programs, research articles were published mainly in social science periodical journals. Most research themes were focused on the advance of parenting attitudes and the most common types of research were program develop ment and effect verification. The research participants were parents who were classifi ed by child development, children with special needs, pre-parents and so on. Second, the results of the research on developing parent education programs showed that whil e earlier studies had focused on content education, recently there has been an increase d interest in self-understanding. Many programs were executed in sessions lasting 2-3 hours for the duration of 4-6 weeks, and had an enrollment of 30 or fewer persons. The quantitative research method dominated in this area, although qualitative research began to be conducted since five years ago. Although various studies were appropriat e and valid to Korean parents, program implementation systems need to be customize d to the life cycle according to child development and they also need to be connected and expanded. The results of this study also suggest that a multidisciplinary approach for an integrative model should be taken into consideration in developing parent educ ation programs.
