a mixture of biologically active substanc- es, an attribute that reduces the possibilities of resistance development by the target nematodes (Dimetry, 2014; Sax- ena, 1983). The use of botanical nematicides has therefore been widely recommended as a suitable alternative of plant protection, with minimal side effects though there are some documented reports of undesirable effects on non-target... efficacy, potency and composition continue to persist, and commercialization of new botanical nematicides is still lagging. Herein, we have reviewed the history of botanical nematicides and regional progresses, the potency of the identified phytochemicals from the key important plant families, and deciphered some of the impediments involved in standardization of the active compounds in addition to the concerns over the safety of the purified compounds to non-target microbial communities. -

is a biologically active aerosol because it contains microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi and their organic compounds, including endotoxins [22]. Endotoxins are one of the most ubiquitous organic compounds in agricultural settings. This is partly due to their heat resistance, which allows them to persist in the environment even under extreme conditions [21]. Airborne endotoxin... Indoor animal husbandry environments are inevitably contaminated with endotoxins. Endotoxin exposure is associated with various inflammatory illnesses in animals. This cross-sectional study evaluated the relationship between the degree of endotoxin exposure and the cellular and humoral immune profiles of fattening pigs. Blood samples were taken from the jugular vein of 47 pigs from ten pig farms in Korea. Whole blood cell counts and plasma immunoglobulin (Ig) classes were determined.... -

the plain diet control, the fermented soy products could be responsible for the immune upregulation described above. Soybeans contain many biologically functional components including isoflavones, unsaturated fatty acids, and bioactive peptides, and the fermentation process is known to improve nutritional and functional properties of soybeans [6,21,34]. Among these components, isoflavone, a... Various functional activities have been reported for the fermented soybean products doenjang (DJ) and cheonggukjang (CGJ), although no systemic investigations of their immune functions have been conducted to date. We examined the effects of an experimental diet of DJ, CGJ, or a mixture of unfermented raw material for 4 weeks on overall immunity and immune safety in mice. No significant alterations were observed in peripheral or splenic immune cells among groups. Enhanced splenic natural killer... -

This study was to investigate the anti-obesity effects of diglyceride (DG)-conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) containing 22% CLA as fatty acids in C57BL/6J ob/ob male mice. There were four experimental groups including vehicle control, DG, CLA, and DG-CLA. The test solutions of 750 mg/kg dose were orally administered to the mice everyday for 5 weeks. CLA treatments significantly decreased mean body weight in the obese mice throughout the experimental period compared to the control (p < 0.01). All... -

To evaluate the estrogenic activities of several chemicals such as 17beta-estradiol (E2), rho-nonylphenol, bisphenol A, butylparaben, and combinations of these chemicals, we used recombinant yeasts containing the human estrogen receptor [Saccharomyces cerevisiae ER + LYS 8127]. We evaluated E2 was most active in the recombinant yeast assay, followed by rho-nonylphenol, bisphenol A, butylparaben. The combinations of some concentrations of 17-estradiol as a strong estrogen and bisphenol A or... -

EGCG, the most biologically active compound in green tea, on trau- matic brain injury and its underlying mechanism. Our re- sults showed that EGCG sign ificantly inhibited TBI-in- duced edema formation and decreased vascular permeability. TBI-induced inflammation was reduced by EGCG treatment. Moreover, EGCG treatment significantly inhibited AQP4 and GFAP expression in injured brain tissue. As... Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of mortality and long-term disability, which can decrease quality of life. In spite of numerous studies suggesting that Epigallocatechin-3- gallate (EGCG) has been used as a therapeutic agent for a broad range of disorders, the effect of EGCG on TBI remains unknown. In this study, a weight drop model was established to evaluate the therapeutic potential of EGCG on TBI. Rats were administered with 100 mg/kg EGCG or PBS intraperitoneally. At different... -

(β-glu- can) on mouse splenocytes. β-glucan-treated cells had en- hanced viability, were protected against cytokine with- drawal-induced cell death, and were more responsive to IL-2. Natural, biologically active compounds are ideal for clinical purposes due to their low intrinsic toxicities [22,23]. Our data provide valuable information that can be used to broaden the use of β-glucan as a... We investigated the effects of Ղ-glucan purified from Paenibacillus polymyxa JB115 on the viability and proliferation of splenocytes. Splenocytes play a critical role in host immunity. MTT assays and trypan blue exclusion tests revealed that Ղ-glucan significantly promoted the viability and proliferation of splenocytes over a range of concentrations. However, there was no specific subset change. Ղ-glucan protected splenocytes from cytokine withdrawal-induced spontaneous cell...
