acts directly on peripheral nerves. Additionally, curcumin blocked the histamine-induced inward current via activation of TRPV1 (curcumin IC50=523 nM). However, it did not alter chloroquine-induced itching behavior in mice, which is associated with transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1). Taken together, our results suggest that histamine-induced itching can be blocked by topical application of curcumin through the inhibitory action of curcumin on TRPV1 receptors in peripheral nerves. -
Neuroprotective effect of caffeic acid phenethyl ester in 3-nitropropionic acid-induced striatal neurotoxicity

a bioactive compound with strong antioxidant activity. This study was designed to test the neuroprotective effect of CAPE in 3-nitropropionic acid (3NP)-induced striatal neurotoxicity, a chemical model of Huntington’s disease (HD). Initially, to test CAPE’s antioxidant activity, a 2,2’-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS) antioxidant assay was employed, and CAPE showed a strong direct radicalscavenging eff ect. In addition, CAPE provided protection from 3NP-induced neuronal... -

used as indices of lipid peroxidation and neutrophil infiltration. ECQ recovered the level of glutathione, activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), and expression of SOD-2. The increased levels of total NO concentration and iNOS expression in the IA-induced chronic gastritis were significantly reduced by treatment with ECQ. These results suggest that the ECQ has a therapeutic effect on chronic gastritis in rats by inhibitory actions on neutrophil infiltration, lipid peroxidation and various steps... -

with BG produced improvement in the escape latency to find the platform. Further, the BG groups showed a reduced loss of cholinergic immunoreactivity and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate-diaphorase (NADPH-d)-positive neurons in the hippocampus compared to that of the ISC group. These results demonstrated that BG has a protective effect against ischemia-induced neuronal and cognitive impairment. Our results suggest that BG might be useful for the treatment of vascular dementia. -
Promoting Effect of Hydrogen Peroxide on 1-Methyl-4-phenylpyridinium-induced Mitochondrial Dysfunction and Cell Death in PC12 Cells

damage, decrease in the mitochondrial transmembrane potential, cytosolic accumulation of cytochrome c, activation of caspase-3, increase in the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and depletion of GSH. Addition of H2O2 enhanced the MPP-induced nuclear damage and cell death. Catalase, Carboxy- PTIO, Mn-TBAP, N-acetylcysteine, cyclosporin A and trifluoperazine inhibited the cytotoxic effect of MPP in the presence of H2O2. Addition of H2O2 promoted the change in the mitochondri... -
Effect of Cyclic Nucleotides on Phorbol Ester-Induced Contraction in Rabbit Carotid Artery

large dose of forskolin relaxed PDBu-induced contraction. PDBu increased cyclic AMP without considerable change in the level of cyclic GMP. Based on these findings, PDBu-induced contraction of rabbit carotid artery was relaxed by cyclic GMP more effectively than cyclic AMP, and the action of cyclic AMP could be mediated by cyclic GMP dependent protein kinase. Therefore it is suggested that the antagonistic action between protein kinase C and cyclic GMP-dependent protein kinase plays a major role... -

a pure androgenic steroid. This study was conducted to examine the effect of DHT (10 M) on H2O2 (10 M) -induced injuries in mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells. H2O2 induced ROS generation and increased lipid peroxide formation and DNA fragmentation. These effects of H2O2 were inhibited by pretreatment with DHT. H2O2 also increased the phosphorylation of p38 MAPK, SAPK/JNK and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-kB), but DHT blocked these effects. Moreover, H2O2 decreased DNA synthesis and the levels of cell... -

We investigated the antihypertensive effect of lutein on NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester hydrochloride (L-NAME)-induced hypertensive rats. Daily oral administration of L-NAME (40 mg/kg)-induced a rapid progressive increase in mean arterial pressure (MAP). L-NAME significantly increased MAP from the first week compared to that in the control and reached 193.3±9.6 mmHg at the end of treatment. MAP in the lutein groups was dose-dependently lower than that in the L-NAME group. Similar results were...
