Nirmala Rao, Stephanie W. Y. Chan, Rhoda Wang, Diana Lee, Rita Y. T. Ng, Yvonne Becher, Carrie Lau, Jin Sun, Frederick K Ho, Patrick Ip 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 23 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2022, Vol.16 No.2 1 1-23 (23 pages)
The Hong Kong Early Child Development Scale (HKECDS) is a tool for assessing holistic early child development in preschoolers aged from three to six years. The original version of the scale, HKECDS, was updated in 2019 (HKECDS-2) to reflect the contemporary context and local curricular expectations. Children (n = 144) from three kindergartens in Hong Kong completed the HKECDS-2 in individual sessions. Rasch model analysis and expert discussions resulted in a short version of the scale (HKECDS-3)... -
Multiple Representations in Preschool Numeracy: Teaching a Lesson on More-or-Less
Alfredo Bautista, Malikka Habib, Raymond Ong, Anthony Eng, Rebecca Bull 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 28 Pages

teach numeracy, thereby showing how theoretical ideas can be applied into practice. We analyze a lesson intended to help 4-5 year old children learn about the concept of more-or-less and about the process of determining differences between two quantities. After describing the structure of the lesson, we analyze the activities and pedagogical strategies employed by the teacher to achieve the intended learning objectives, with special emphasis on the mediation of representations as learning tools.... -
Supporting Preschool Children’s Early Writing with Self-Regulated Learning Strategies
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 25 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2019, Vol.13 No.2 5 69-93 (25 pages)
Research suggests that early writing is crucial in the development of young children’s literacy skills and links to their conventional literacy outcomes in elementary school and beyond. In order to enhance the will and the skills to express thoughts explicitly and effectively in early writing among preschool children, self-regulated learning (SRL) was suggested. This experimental study involved seventy-five preschool children, aged from five to six years old in Malaysia, aimed to investigate... -
The Role of Professional Development in Improving Quality and Supporting Child Outcomes in Early Education and Care
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 20 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2019, Vol.13 No.2 4 49-68 (20 pages)
A skilled workforce that understands the needs of children and can deliver high quality curricula to children with diverse needs, is required in order to realise the wide-ranging benefits that could follow from public investment in ECEC provision (such as in-service Professional Development (PD)). It is well established in the literature that high quality ECEC is important for children’s outcomes, and that variations in quality can be explained, to a large extent, by variations in educator... -
Creating Collective Scientific Consciousness: A Cultural-Historical Study of Early Learning about Earth and Space in the Context of Family Imaginary Play
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 32 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.2 6 93-124 (32 pages)
theoretical discussion of data collected reveals that a collectively created imaginary situation provides the conditions for a child’s exploration of scientific phenomenon not directly observable (e.g. Earth rotation and revolution). A form of collectively supported scientific consciousness was realized through discussions, imagining and re-imagining of everyday objects as scientific phenomenon. Scientific laws, as the rules of the scientific play being enacted by the family, enabled the child... -
Number-Fact Knowledge and Mathematical Problem-solving of 5- to 7-year-olds
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 17 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2015, Vol.9 No.3 3 27-43 (17 pages)
This paper examines children’s number fact knowledge in relation to mathematics problem solving. These findings are derived from a study that set out to explore the impact on mathematics learning of using multiplication and division contexts with 84 five- to seven-year-old children from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds. After a series of focused lessons, children’s knowledge of number facts, including single-digit addition, subtraction, and doubles improved substantially. However,... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 22 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.1 4 57-78 (22 pages)
In Australia, over one third of all children in Early Childhood programs speak a first language other than English. Despite considerable work into teachers’ beliefs on cultural diversity, attention to aspects of second language acquisition in the Early Years has been limited within the Early Childhood field. This paper reports on a small study investigating how four early childhood educators understand theory of Second Language Acquisition (SLA) and bilingualism, and how they cater for... -
