Potassium Currents in Isolated Deiters' Cells of Guinea Pig
JongWooChung, EuiCholNam, WonTaeKim, JaeBoumYoum, ChaeHunLeem 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 10 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2013, Vol.17 No.6 10 537-546 (10 pages)
Deiters' cells are the supporting cells in organ of Corti and are suggested to play an important role in biochemical and mechanical modulation of outer hair cells. We successfully isolated functionally different K+ currents from Deiters’ cells of guinea pig using whole cell patch clamp technique. With high K+ pipette solution, depolarizing step pulses activated strongly outward rectifying currents which were dose-dependently blocked by clofilium, a class III anti-arrhythmic K+ channel blocker.... -

Gender differences in the trace elements of monkey sino-atrial (SA) node were investigated in a process of age-dependent alterations. Sixty hearts from Japanese and rhesus monkeys (30 male and 30 female) used were aged ranging from 1-day- to 30-year-old. The elements were analyzed using an inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES). Advancing age decreased all the trace elements. Ca, P, S and Mg significantly decreased. The correlation coefficients of Ca and P were... -

We have shown that myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) was required for the off-contraction in response to the electrical field stimulation (EFS) of feline esophageal smooth muscle. In this study, we investigated whether protein kinase C (PKC) may require the on-contraction in response to EFS using feline esophageal smooth muscle. The contractions were recorded using an isometric force transducer. On-contraction occurred in the presence of NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME), suggesting that... -
Zinc Inhibits Amyloid β Production from Alzheimer's Amyloid Precursor Protein in SH-SY5Y Cells

Zinc released from excited glutamatergic neurons accelerates amyloidՂ(AՂ)aggregation, underscoring the therapeutic potential of zinc chelation for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Zinc can also alter AՂconcentration by affecting its degradation. In order to elucidate the possible role of zinc influx in secretase-processed AՂproduction, SH-SY5Y cells stably expressing amyloid precursor protein (APP) were treated with pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate (PDTC), a zinc... -
Changes of Hemodynamics and Renal Function due to Acute Cadmium Exposure in Rats
Jae-JoongKim, YungKyuKim 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.3 4 137-142 (6 pages)
The systolic and diastolic pressures in anesthetized Sprague-Dawley male rats were greatly decreased after single-dose of Cd treatment without significant changes in heart rate. There was a fluid-shift into the third space and/or -loss through the kidney, since plasma Na concentration and hematocrit ratio were significantly increased by acute Cd exposure. The present study showed that the sustained hypotensive effect of single-dose Cd on the cardiovascular system might have resulted from... -
Neuroprotective Effects of Lithium on NMDA-induced Excitotoxicity in Mouse Cerebrum
Gee-younKwon, Soo-kyungKim 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 12 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.3 1 111-122 (12 pages)
Neuroprotective properties of lithium were evaluated by using in vivo NMDA excitotoxicity model. Systemic injection of NMDA to young mice induced neuronal apoptosis mediated by both TNFR-1 and Fas ligand, and long-term lithium treatment showed noticeable neuroprotection against NMDA-induced excitotoxicity: NMDA-damaged neurons expressed several apoptosis-related gene products such as TNFR-1, Fas ligand, and caspase-3, and these gene expressions were not found in the brain of mice chronically... -
Effects of Zinc on Spontaneous Miniature GABA Release in Rat Hippocampal CA3 Pyramidal Neurons
Byung-JuChoi, Il-SungJang 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.2 1 59-64 (6 pages)
The effects of Zn2 on spontaneous glutamate and GABA release were tested in mechanically dissociated rat CA3 pyramidal neurons which retained functional presynaptic nerve terminals. The spontaneous miniature excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic currents (mEPSCs and mIPSCs, respectively) were pharmacologically isolated and recorded using whole-cell patch clamp technique under voltage-clamp conditions. Zn2 at a lower concentration (30μM) increased GABAergic mIPSC frequency without... -
Lysophosphatidylcholine Attenuates Endothelium-dependent Relaxation Responses through Inhibition of ACh-induced Endothelial [Ca2+]i Increase

Lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), which accumulates in atherosclerotic arteries, has been reported to inhibit endothelium-dependent relaxation (EDR) in many different species. However, the underlying mechanism of LPC-induced inhibition of EDR is still uncertain. In the present study, we measured simultaneously both isometric tension and cytosolic free Ca2 ([Ca2]i) in rabbit carotid strips, and examined the effect of LPC on tension and [Ca2]i. In carotid strips with... -
pH-mediated Regulation of Pacemaker Activity in Cultured Interstitial Cells of Cajal
ByungJooKim, JaeHwaLee, InsukSo, KiWhanKim 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.1 2 7-12 (6 pages)
Interstitial cells of Cajal (ICCs) are pacemakers in gastrointestinal tracts, regulating rhythmicity by activating nonselective cation channels (NSCCs). In the present study, we investigated the general characteristics and pH-mediated regulation of pacemaker activity in cultured interstitial cells of Cajal. Under voltage clamp mode and at the holding potential of 60 mV, the I-V relationships and difference current showed that there was no reversal potential and voltage-independent inward... -

a cation channel protein permeable to various metal ions such as Mg2, is ubiquitously expressed in variety of cells including lymphocytes. The activity of TRPM7 is tightly regulated by intracellular Mg2, thus named Mg2-inhibited cation (MIC) current, and its expression is known to be critical for the viability and proliferation of B lymphocytes. In this study, the level of MIC current was compared between immature (WEHI-231) and mature (Bal-17) B lymphocytes. In both cell...
