to be 1000-fold more sensitive than the conventional RT-PCR method. The detection limits of this assay was 1 TCID 50 /ml of the FMDV RNA concentration. Quantification was obtained by a standard curves plotting threshold cycle values versus known infectivity titer. The assay was sensitive, specific and rapid enough to detect FMDV RNA genome in probang samples. As such, the described method is reliable and provides faster disease diagnostics than the conventional RT-PCR procedure to detect FMDV. -
Cap-independent protein translation is initially responsible for 4-(N-methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-butanone (NNK)-induced apoptosis in normal human bronchial pithelial cells

lung carcinogen)-induced apoptosis in human bronchial epithelial cells were examined by caspase assay, FACS analysis, Western blotting, and transient transfection. Results showed that NNK induced apoptosis in concentration- and time-dependent manners. NNK-induced apoptosis occurred initially through cap-independent protein translation, which during later stage was replaced by cap-dependent protein translation. Our data may be pplicable as the mechanical basis of lung cancer treatment. -
Exposure to genistein does not adversely affect the reproductive system in adult male mice adapted to a soy-based commercial diet

Genistein, a soybean-originated isoflavone, is widely consumed by humans for putative beneficial health effects but its estrogenic activity may affect adversely the development of male reproductive system. Five-week-old ICR mice were purchased and fed with a soybean-based Purina Chow diet until 6 months of age. The animals were exposed by gavage to genistein (2.5 mg/kg/day) or 17β-estradiol (7.5μg/kg/day) for five weeks. Corn oil was used for the negative control. The animals were fed the... -
Effects of cyclosporin A treatment on the pathogenesis of avian leukosis virus subgroup J infection in broiler chickens with Marek’s disease virus exposure

대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 2003, 제 4권 제 3호 8 245-255 (11 pages)
In this study, we investigated the effects of T-cell suppression on the pathogenesis of subgroup J avian leukosis virus (ALV-J). Chickens were treated with cyclosporin A (CSP) 50 mg/Kg body weight or a corresponding volume of olive oil per every three days after hatching until the end of experiment. Some of the chickens from each treatment group were infected with an isolate of ALV-J, ADOL-7501, at 2 weeks of age. The effects of viral infection were compared to uninfected birds in same treatment... -

tissues of broilers. Residue concentrations were associated with administered dose. At the termination of treatment, roxithromycin was found in all collected samples for both dose groups. Liver was detected to have the highest residual concentration of roxithromycin. Residue concentrations of roxithromycin were lower than its LOQ in all tissues from both dose groups 10 days after the treatment of roxithromycin mixed with drinking water at a dose rate of 15 mg/L or 60 mg/L to each broiler for 7... -
Host Immune Responses Against Hog Cholera Virus in Pigs Treated with an Ionized Alkali Mineral Complex

in a final concentration (T-1, n=10), a diet mixed with SuperFeed as 3% (w/w) in a final concentration (T-2, n=10), or a diluted PowerFeel solution (1:500, v/v) as drinking water (T-3, n=10), respectively. A group (n=10) served as a non-treated control. Proportions of expressing CD2+ and CD8+ cells increased significantly (p<, 0.05) at 8-week post-application. Mean antibody titers of each group against HCV gradually increased to higher levels after vaccination and with challenge of the virulent... -

A wide range of chemicals derived from plant and human-made xenobiotics are reported to have hormonal activities. The present study was performed to examine the estrogenic effect of Kwao Keur, Pueraria mirifica (PM), that has been used as a rejuvenating folk medicine in Thailand, using recombinant yeast, MCF-7 cell proliferation and HepG2 cell transient transfection assay. In recombinant yeast assay, 0.025, 0.25, 2.5, 25, 2.5 x 10(2), 2.5 x 10(3), 2.5 x 10(4) ng/ml concentrations of PM did not... -
Angiogenesis effects of nerve growth factor (NGF) on rat corneas
Kangmoon Seo, Jongil Choi, Myungjin Park, Changhun Rhee 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 6 Pages
대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 2001, 제 2권 제 2호 10 125-130 (6 pages)
This study was performed to evaluate the effects of nerve growth factor (NGF) upon angiogenesis in the rat cornea, to examine its possible application as an alternative angiogenic inducer and to provide basic data for further studies. Angiogenesis was induced by cornea micropocket assay, as previously described. Eight of thirty two eyes of Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to one of four groups, namely, a non-NGF group (Group 0), a 0.5 ng of NGF group (Group 0.5), a 1.0 ng of NGF group... -
Immunostimulatory effects of anionic alkali mineral complex solution Barodon in porcine lymphocytes

대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 2001, 제 2권 제 1호 3 15-24 (10 pages)
The anionic alkali mineral complex solution, Barodon (Barodon-S.F. Corp., Korea), was evaluated for its effectiveness as a nonspecific immunostimulator in pigs. The effects of Barodon were determined by analysis of feed efficiency, growth rate, and phenotype of leukocyte subpopulations using monoclonal antibodies specific to porcine leukocyte differentiation antigens and flow cytometry (FC). The study was focused to investigate the change in proportion of the CD4+CD8+ double positive T... -
The clinical implication of sodium-potassium ratios in dogs
Son-Il Pak 대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 5 Pages
대한수의학회 Journal of Veterinary Science 2000, 제 1권 제 1호 9 61-65 (5 pages)
Although there have been substantial evidences on the usefulness of electrolytes for the diagnosis of disease, the evidences for a direct link between serum sodium and serum potassium in relation to a specific disease are very limited. This study was performed to investigate an association between diseases and Na:K ratios in dogs. From January 1997 to December 1999, a total of 39 cases with an Na:K ratio less than 27 were retrieved from the medical records of Veterinary Medical Teaching...
