Hole quality assessment of drilled CFRP and CFRP-Ti stacks holes using polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tools
Dave Kim, Aaron Beal, Kiweon Kang, Sang-Young Kim 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2017, Vol.23 1 1-8 (8 pages)
Polycrystalline diamond (PCD) tools possessing high hardness and abrasive wear resistance are particularly suited for drilling of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) composites, where tool life and consistent hole quality are important. While PCD presents superior performance when drilling CFRP, it is unclear how it performs when drilling multi-stack materials such as CFRP-titanium (Ti) stacks. This comparative study aims to investigate drilling of a Ti plate stacked on a CFRP panel when... -
Activating needle coke to develop anode catalyst for direct methanol fuel cell
Young Hun Park, Ui-Su Im, Byung-Rok Lee, Dong-Hyun Peck, Sang-Kyung Kim, Young Woo Rhee, Doo-Hwan Jung 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 6 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.20 7 47-52 (6 pages)
suggest that an activated KOH needle coke container has the lowest onset potential and the highest degree of catalyst activity among all commercial catalysts. Through an analysis of the CO stripping voltammetry, we found that KOH activated catalysis showed a 21% higher electrochemical active surface area (ECSA), with a value of 31.37 m2/g, than the ECSA of deactivated catalyst (25.82 m2/g). The latter figure was 15% higher than the value of one specific commercial catalyst (TEC86E86). -
Phenylethynyl-terminated polyimide, exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets, and the composites: an overview
Donghwan Cho, Lawrence T. Drzal 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 11 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2016, Vol.19 1 1-11 (11 pages)
In efforts to characterize and understand the properties and processing of phenylethynyl-terminated imide (LaRC PETI-5, simply referred to as PETI-5) oligomers and polymers as a high-temperature sizing material for carbon fiber-reinforced polymer matrix composites, PETI-5 imidization and thermal curing behaviors have been extensively investigated based on the phenylethynyl end-group reaction. These studies are reviewed here. In addition, the use of PETI-5 to enhance interfacial adhesion between... -
Manufacturing and characteristics of PAN-based composite carbon fibers containing cellulose particles
Jee-Woo Yang, Da Young Jin, Ji Eun Lee, Seung Goo Lee, Won Ho Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 8 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.3 7 203-210 (8 pages)
This study fabricated low thermal conductive polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based carbon fibers containing cellulose particles while maintaining their mechanical properties. The high thermal conductivity of carbon fibers limits their application as a high temperature insulator in various systems such as an insulator for propulsion parts in aerospace or missile systems. By controlling process parameters such as the heat treatment temperature of the cellulose particles and the amount of cellulose added,... -
Preparation and characterization of carbon fiber-reinforced thermosetting composites: a review
Fan-Long Jin, Soo-Jin Park 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 11 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2015, Vol.16 No.2 1 67-77 (11 pages)
Carbon fibers (CFs) have a unique combination of properties which allow them to be widely used as reinforcing materials in advanced polymer composites. The mechanical properties of CF-reinforced polymer composites are governed mainly by the quality of interfacial adhesion between the CFs and the polymer matrix. Surface treatments of CFs are generally carried out to introduce chemical functional groups on the fiber surfaces, which provide the ability to control the surface characteristics of CFs.... -
Method and mechanism of dispersing agent free dispersion of short carbon fibers in silicon carbide powder
Thakur Sudesh Kumar Raunija, Mariamma Mathew, Sharad Chandra Sharma 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 7 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.3 4 180-186 (7 pages)
This study highlights a novel method and mechanism for the rapid and effective milling of carbon fibers (CFs) in silicon carbide (SiC) powder, and also the dispersion of CFs in SiC powder. The composite powders were prepared by chopping and exfoliation of CFs, and ball milling of CFs and SiC powder in isopropyl alcohol. A wide range of CFs loading, from 10 to 50 vol%, was studied. The milling of CFs and SiC powder was checked by measuring the average particle size of the composite powders. The... -
My life and carbon
peter A. Thrower 한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 5 Pages
한국탄소학회 Carbon Letters 2014, Vol.15 No.2 1 1-5 (5 pages)
My introduction to carbon science was unplanned and unexpected. After I received my B.A. in physics from the University of Cambridge (UK) in 1960, I agreed to take an appointment at the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) Atomic Energy Research Establishment (AERE), Harwell, UK. Starting September 1, I was to work on a project studying focused collision sequences in metals. For personal reasons, I was not able to report until a month later, when I was informed that my original...
