The Power of Harmony: Insights from a Korean Children’s Community-Based Chorus
Hae Min Yu 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 23 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2016, Vol.10 No.1 2 21-43 (23 pages)
educators and Korean parents found that engaging in a community-based chorus provided developmentally appropriate and culturally responsive experiences for young children and their families. These findings suggest that the nature of group musical experiences can be harmonized with early childhood curricula, and provide more comprehensive understandings about the Korean culture, relating how culturally relevant teaching can lead to positive effects for immigrant children and their families. -
The role of units in the concept of length for four- to six-year-old children
Johanna Z?llner, Christiane Benz 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 17 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2015, Vol.9 No.3 5 67-83 (17 pages)
The understanding of the unit is a key point in the development of the concept of length. The understanding of unit is necessary for measuring as well as for comparing indirectly by using unit iteration. This article describes a study that investigated the use of units by children when they were comparing lines indirectly. The correlations between different aspects of the use of units are examined: the understanding of units, the use of units for decomposing and for counting are investigated. -
The Effects of Joint Reference and Mutual Exclusivity on the Application of Whole-Object Assumption in 3-Year Olds Filipino-English Bilingual Preschool Students
Edna S. Miraflores, Rochelle Irene G. Lucas 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 19 Pages

learning. Each constraint was tested through audio-visual PowerPoint slides and these were the sources of the data for this study. Through these tests, the study found that the 3-year old respondents assign a new word/label to the whole object and not to any of its parts. A new word/label, however, is assigned to a part of the object if the object is already familiar to the respondents. They also do not apparently rely on social cues like looking or gazing in their learning of a new word/label. -
The Gap between What You Think You Know and What You Know: A Study on Early Childhood Pre-Service Teachers’ Self-Perceptions and Actual Understandings of Musical Knowledge
Jinyoung Kim, Seung Yeon Lee, Suhyun Kwon, Seonmi Park 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 17 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.3 3 41-57 (17 pages)
between self-perceptions and actual level of understandings of musical knowledge was not significantly different among the groups of participants with different periods of musical training except for timbre and dynamics. The results of this study were discussed in terms of what early childhood pre-service teachers still need, and how teacher education programs should prepare the teachers equipped with necessary knowledge in order for them to provide rich musical experiences for young children. -

(d) giving. A total of 380 incidents of helping behaviors were noted. Findings suggest that aiding (55.79%) is the most displayed helping behavior followed by sharing (34.21%), giving (8.16%), and comforting (1.84%). The helping behaviors were mostly self-initiated (52.37%) and routine-based (32.9%) rather than adult- (13.32%), peer-initiated (10.53%) or modeled behaviors (0.79%). These findings are attributed to the socialization of the class routine and rules at the beginning of the semester. -

not only increased content knowledge in subjects such as science and literacy but also increased the amount of shared or communal agency in the classroom, even affecting the development of social capabilities by the children and teacher alike. Using a conceptual framework borrowed from development economics and particularly the work on agency and capabilities by Sen (1999; 2003), this paper counters a strictly psychological, individualistic version of agency and instead conceptualizes agency as... -

Judith A. Schickedanz 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 21 Pages
환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2014, Vol.8 No.2 2 5-25 (21 pages)
achievement difficulties in school-age children, sets the stage for the author’s suggestion that preschoolers’ social-emotional understanding would also likely benefit, if story reading goals and strategies were changed to focus on higher-level story comprehension. Examples of suitable storybooks and comprehension support strategies are used to illustrate how the complementary goals of supporting story comprehension and social-emotional learning might be addressed. These examples also suggest... -

reactions to technology reported on here apply widely across disciplines and curricular areas in early childhood. We focus first on current research related to the role of technology in preschool children’s early language and literacy instruction and then discuss what we believe is critically important to address by any preschool or other level of educational institution in order to redress serious shortcomings in the role of technology in the classroom education of today’s young children. -

adopting voices for characters, adding the reader’s interpretation or asking questions of the listener, adapting the story by changing parts of sentences, and reading some parts of the picture book, while omitting others. The course benefited the mothers’ story-sharing skills and their parental efficacy beliefs. Korean language teaching materials and their use are discussed, along with implications for governmental inclusion policies for people whose backgrounds are not in Korean culture.
