Lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), a metabolite of membrane phospholipids by phospholipase A2, has been considered responsible for the development of abnormal vascular reactivity during atherosclerosis. Ca2+ influx was shown to be augmented in atherosclerotic artery which might be responsible for abnormal vascular reactivity. However, the mechanism underlying Ca2+ influx change in atherosclerotic artery remains undetermined. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of LPC on... -
Long-Term Tropical Residency Diminishes Central Sudomotor Sensitivities in Male Subjects

Tropical natives (TROP) are capable of tolerating tropical heat because of their long-term adaptation to tropical environments. When exposed to heat stress, these natives tend to respond with lower sweat output, which is generally thought to be the result of heat acclimatization. The main objective of this study was to clarify central mechanisms inherent to suppressed thermal sweating in tropical natives (Malaysians) by comparing their sweating responses to those of temperate native (TEMP)... -
Induction of Heme Oxygenase-1 by Traditional Herb Mix Extract Improves MKN-74 Cell Survival and Reduces Stomach Bleeding in Rats by Ethanol and Aspirin in vivo

Chinese herb medicines have traditionally been used to treat or alleviate the symptom of various diseases. The rationale for use of certain herbs to certain disorder is now getting unveiled by modern technology. In the present study, we investigated whether herb mix extract (HMX), which is alleged to be useful for gastric ulcer, protects stomach from oxidative stress. Rats were allowed to normal diet with and without HMX (1, 5, 10 mg/kg) for 30 days. To induce gastric ulcer, ethanol (75%, 1.5... -

an exposure to hypergravity stimulus was determined in rats. The animals were subjected to a force of 2 g (twice earth's gravity) for 1, 3, or 12 h, and were examined poststimulus at 0, 2, 6, 12, and 24 h. RT-PCR (reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction) and real-time quantitative RT-PCR were adopted to analyze temporal changes in the expression of c-fos mRNA. The hypergravity stimulus increased the expression of c-fos mRNA in the vestibular ganglion, medial vestibular nucleus, inferior... -
Effects of Zinc on Spontaneous Miniature GABA Release in Rat Hippocampal CA3 Pyramidal Neurons
Byung-JuChoi, Il-SungJang 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.2 1 59-64 (6 pages)
The effects of Zn2 on spontaneous glutamate and GABA release were tested in mechanically dissociated rat CA3 pyramidal neurons which retained functional presynaptic nerve terminals. The spontaneous miniature excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic currents (mEPSCs and mIPSCs, respectively) were pharmacologically isolated and recorded using whole-cell patch clamp technique under voltage-clamp conditions. Zn2 at a lower concentration (30μM) increased GABAergic mIPSC frequency without... -
Direct Block of Cloned K+ Channels, Kv1.5 and Kv1.3, by Cyclosporin A, Independent of Calcineurin Inhibition

in a tail crossover phenomenon. Block of Kv1.5 by CsA was use-dependent. CsA also blocked Kv1.3 currents at 50 mV in a reversible concentration-dependent manner with an apparent IC50 of 1.1μM. The same effects of CsA on Kv1.3 were also observed in excised inside-out patches when applied to the internal surface of the membrane. The present results suggest that CsA acts directly on Kv1.5 currents as an open-channel blocker, independently of the effects of CsA on calcineurin activity. -
The Effects of DTBNP on Intracellular Ca2+ Signaling in Cultured Bovine Aortic Endothelial Cells
SungJinPark, ByungJooKim, MeiHongZhu, InsukSo, KiWhanKim 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.6 5 341-346 (6 pages)
The mechanism underlying oxidant-induced intracellular Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) increase was studied in cultured bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAECs) using fura-2 AM. In the presence of 2 mM extracellular Ca2+, the application of DTBNP (20μM), a membrane-permeable oxidant, caused an increase in [Ca2+]i, and DTT (2 mM) as a reductant completely reversed the effect of DTBNP. The [Ca2+]i increase induced by DTBNP was also observed in an extracellular Ca2+-free/2 mM EGTA solution, indicating the release... -

Endothelium, particularly pulmonary endothelium, is predisposed to injury by reactive oxygen species (ROS) and their derivatives. Heme oxygenase (HO) has been demonstrated to provide cytoprotective effects in models of oxidant-induced cellular and tissue injuries. In the present study, we investigated the effects of YS 49 against oxidant [tert-butylhydroperoxide (TBH)]-induced injury using cultured sheep pulmonary artery endothelial cells (SPAECs). The viability of SPAECs was determined by... -

We investigated the effects of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone on inflammatory response of iNOS and COX-2 expression in rat vascular smooth muscle cells. Rat vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) stimulated with bacterial lipopolysaccharide (LPS; 10μg/ml) for 24 hours were incubated with increasing amounts of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (1 and 100 nM). LPS was found to induce inflammatory response of iNOS and COX-2 mRNA and protein in VSMC. These processes were affected by male sex... -
Acetylcholine Induces Hyperpolarization Mediated by Activation of K(Ca) Channels in Cultured Chick Myoblasts
DoyunLee, JaeheeHan, Jae-YongPark 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.1 6 37-44 (8 pages)
Our previous report demonstrated that chick myoblasts are equipped with Ca2-permeable stretch- activated channels and Ca2-activated potassium channels (KCa), and that hyperpolarization-induced by KCa channels provides driving force for Ca2 influx through the stretch-activated channels into the cells. Here, we showed that acetylcholine (ACh) also hyperpolarized the membrane of cultured chick myoblasts, suggesting that nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR) may be another...
