Take-all of Wheat and Natural Disease Suppression: A Review
The Plant Pathology Journal 11 Pages
2 125-135 (11 pages)
In agro-ecosystems worldwide, some of the most important and devastating diseases are caused by soil-borne necrotrophic fungal pathogens, against which crop plants generally lack genetic resistance. However, plants have evolved approaches to protect themselves against pathogens by stimulating and supporting specific groups of beneficial microorganisms that have the ability to protect either by direct inhibition of the pathogen or by inducing resistance mechanisms in the plant. One of the best... -
Virulence of Xanthomonas translucens pv. poae Isolated from Poa annua
The Plant Pathology Journal 6 Pages
11 93-98 (6 pages)
Bacterial wilt is a vascular wilt disease caused by Xanthomonas translucens pv. poae that infects Poa annua, a grass that is commonly found on golf course greens throughout the world. Bacterial wilt causes symptoms of etiolation, wilting, and foliar necrosis. The damage is most prevalent during the summer and the pathogen can kill turf under conditions optimal for disease development. Fifteen isolates of X. translucens pv. poae were collected from northern regions in the United States and tested... -
Biocontrol of Late Blight (Phytophthora capsici) Disease and Growth Promotion of Pepper by Burkholderia cepacia MPC-7
The Plant Pathology Journal 10 Pages
8 67-76 (10 pages)
It produced gluconic acid and 2-ketogluconic acid related to the decrease in pH of broth culture. The antagonist produced benzoic acid (BA) and phenylacetic acid (PA). The authentic compounds, BA and PA, showed a broad spectrum of antimicrobial activity against yeast, several bacterial and fungal pathogens in vitro. To demonstrate the biocontrol efficiency of MPC-7 on late blight disease caused by Phytophthora capsici, pepper plants in pot trials were treated with modified medium only (M), M... -
Biological Efficacy of Streptomyces sp. Strain BN1 against the Cereal Head Blight Pathogen Fusarium graminearum
The Plant Pathology Journal 15 Pages
6 52-66 (15 pages)
Fusarium head blight (FHB) caused by the filamentous fungus Fusarium graminearum is one of the most severe diseases threatening the production of small grains. Infected grains are often contaminated with mycotoxins such as zearalenone and trichothecences. During survey of contamination by FHB in rice grains, we found a bacterial isolate, designated as BN1, antagonistic to F. graminearum. The strain BN1 had branching vegetative hyphae and spores, and its aerial hyphae often had long, straight... -
Identification of a Gene Encoding Adenylate Kinase Involved in Antifungal Activity Expression of the Biocontrol Strain Burkholderia pyrrocinia CH-67
The Plant Pathology Journal 8 Pages
4 373-380 (8 pages)
Burkholderia pyrrocinia CH-67 is a biocontrol bacterium with strong antifungal activity against several plant pathogenic fungi. Transposon mutagenesis was performed to identify the genes responsible for the antifungal activity of B. pyrrocinia CH-67. Of the 2,500 mutants tested using the Fulvia fulva spore screening method, a mutant deficient in antifungal activity, M208, was selected. DNA sequence analysis of the transposon-inserted region revealed that a gene encoding an adenylate... -
Mode of Action of Streptomycin Resistance in the Citrus Canker Pathogen (Xanthomonas smithii subsp. citri) in Jeju Island
The Plant Pathology Journal 5 Pages
11 207-211 (5 pages)
The strB gene was amplified from the isolates that acquired the resistance by mixed culture, and one isolate of them was also point-mutated in codon 41 of rpsL gene to be resistant. In this study, most of the streptomycin-resistant isolates of X. smithii sub sp. citri in Jeju island expressed the resistance by both chromosomal point mutation and gene acquisition, and the resistance was easily acquired through conjugation by culture mixed with streptomycin resistant and sensitive strains. -
Research Notes : Mannitol Amendment as a Carbon Source in a Bean-based Formulation Enhances Biocontrol Efficacy of a 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol-producing Pseudomonas sp. NJ134 Against Tomato Fusarium Wilt
The Plant Pathology Journal 6 Pages
14 390-395 (6 pages)
of NJ134 culture filtrates showed that 2,4-diacetylphloroglucinol (DAPG) was the major compound inhibiting in vitro growth of F. oxysporum. DAPG production was greatly enhanced in the NJ134 strain by adding mannitol to the growth media, and in vitro antagonistic activity against F. oxysporum increased. Bioformulations developed from growth of NJ134 in sterile bean media with mannitol as the carbon source under plastic bags resulted in effective biocontrol efficacy against Fusarium wilt. The... -
Research Articles : Purification and Structural Analysis of Surfactin Produced by Endophytic Bacillus subtilis EBS05 and its Antagonistic Activity Against Rhizoctonia cerealis
The Plant Pathology Journal 7 Pages
6 342-348 (7 pages)
th of strain EBS05 can more effectively control WSED than can fludioxonil. The fermentation broth and bacteria-free filter ability to suppress WSED was not significantly different, suggesting that an active secreted substance played a major role in controlling WSED. Separation and purification of the active compounds was carried out by serial processes, including hydrochloric acid (pH 2.0) treatment, methanol extraction and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography, silica gel column chromatography... -
Selection of KYC 3270, a Cellulolytic Myxobacteria of Sorangium cellulosum, against Several Phytopathogens and a Potential Biocontrol Agent against Gray Mold in Stored Fruit
The Plant Pathology Journal 9 Pages
7 257-265 (9 pages)
group of antifungal isolates of myxobacterial extracts compared to the other pathogens` groups. Among seventy-nine bioactive myxobacteria, four isolates, KYC 3130, KYC 3247, KYC 3248 and KYC 3270, were selected and all were cellulolytic. Liquid culture filtrates of these four myxobacteria were applied to tomato, cherry tomato, strawberry, and kiwi fruits 5 h before inoculation with gray mold conidia; then the treated fruits were placed in an airtight container and the experiment was repeated six...
