of 4-AP reversibly inhibited the spontaneous transient outward currents (STOCs). The reversal potential and the sensitivity to charybdotoxin indicated that the STOCs were due to the activation of BKCa. The BKCa currents were recorded in single channel resolution under the cell-attached mode of patch-clamp technique for minimal perturbation of intracellular environment. Application of 4-AP also inhibited the single BKCa currents reversibly and dose-dependently. The membrane potential of rabbit... -
Characterization of Intermediate Conductance K+ Channels in Submandibular Gland Acinar Cells
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 5 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.6 5 305-309 (5 pages)
There are some evidences that K efflux evoked by muscarinic stimulation is not mainly mediated by large conductance K (BK) channels in salivary gland. In this experiment, we therefore characterised non BK channels in rat submandibular gland acinar cells and examined the possibility of agonist effect on this channel using a patch clamp technique. Two types of K channels were observed in these cells. BK channels were observed in 3 cells from total 6 cells and its average... -
Modulation of Inwardly Rectifying K+ Channel by Intracellular and Extracellular pH in Bovine Aortic Endothelial Cells
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.5 4 255-260 (6 pages)
The effects of intracellular and extracellular pH on the inwardly rectifying K (IRK) channel of the bovine aortic endothelial cells (BAECs) were examined using whole-cell patch-clamp technique. The IRK current, efficiently blocked by Ba2 (200μM), is the most prominent membrane current in BAECs, which mainly determines the resting membrane potential. The expression of Kir2.1 was observed in BAECs using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis.... -
Identification of ATP-sensitive K+ Conductances in Male Rat Major Pelvic Ganglion Neurons
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.5 3 247-254 (8 pages)
Major pelvic ganglia (MPG) neurons are classified into sympathetic and parasympathetic neurons according to the electrophysiological properties; membrane capacitance (Cm), expression of T-type Ca2 channels, and the firing patterns during depolarization. In the present study, function and molecular expression of ATP-sensitive K (KATP) channels was investigated in MPG neurons of male rats. Only in parasympathetic MPG neurons showing phasic firing patterns, hyperpolarizing changes... -
Increases in Effective Cleft Glutamate Concentration During Expression of LTP
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.2 8 113-120 (8 pages)
Long-term potentiation (LTP) at hippocampal CA3-CA1 synapses is often associated with increases in quantal size, traditionally attributed to enhanced availability or efficacy of postsynaptic glutamate receptors. However, augmented quantal size might also reflect increases in neurotransmitter concentration within the synaptic cleft since AMPA-type glutamate receptors are not generally saturated during basal transmission. Here we report evidence that peak cleft glutamate concentration... -
Congenital LQT Syndromes From Gene to Torsade de Pointes
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2002, Vol.6 No.1 1 1-8 (8 pages)
Congenital Long QT syndrome (LQTs) is a relatively rare pathologic disorder but results frequently in sudden cardiac death. Of the six LQTs that have been clinically described, five have been worked out for their genetic and biophysical profile. Most are generated by mutations which cause a loss of function in two delayed Kcurrents, iKs and iKr. One syndrome is generated by mutations in the Na channel which causes essentially a gain of function in the channel. Clinically the... -

(PKC)-dependent pathway. In contrast, lower esophageal sphincter (LES) contraction induced by maximally effective doses of ACh is mediated by muscarinic M3 receptors, linked to pertussis toxin-insensitive GTP-binding proteins of the Gq/11 type. They activate phospholipase C, which hydrolyzes phosphatidylinositol bisphosphate (PIP2), producing inositol 1, 4, 5-trisphosphate (IP3) and DAG. IP3 causes release of intracellular Ca2 and formation of a Ca2-calmodulin complex, resulting in... -
Altered Delayed Rectifier K+ Current of Rabbit Coronary Arterial Myocytes in Isoproterenol-Induced Hypertrophy
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2001, Vol.5 No.1 5 33-40 (8 pages)
The main findings of the study are as follows: (1) the KDR current density was decreased without changes of the channel kinetics in isoproterenol-induced hypertrophy; (2) the sensitivity of coronary KDR channels to 4-AP was increased in isoproterenol-induced hypertrophy. From the above results, we suggest for the first time that the alteration of KDR channels may limit vasodilating responses to several stimuli and may be involved in impaired coronary reserve in isoproterenol-induced hypertrophy. -
The Effect of Carbon Monoxide on Contraction, Cytosolic Ca2+ Level and Ionic Currents in Guinea Pig Ileal Smooth Muscle

of 60 mV, we found that CO had little effect on the peak Ba currents (IBa) when voltage was stepped from 60 mV to 0 mV. In addition, CO showed no effect on the depolarization-activated outward K currents in the all potential ranges. We conclude that CO inhibits smooth muscle contraction mainly by decreasing the Ca2 sensitivity of contractile elements via a cGMP-dependent pathway, not by involving L-type Ca2 and outward-potassium currents in guinea-pig ileum. -
Zn2+ Modulates the Responses of Rat Dorsal Horn Neuron to C-Fiber Stimulation and Excitatory Amino Acids

Zinc contained in the neurons of central nervous system is activity-dependently released and then attenuates NMDA (N-methyl-D-aspartate)-induced neurotoxicity while augmenting non-NMDA-induced neurodegeneration. Zinc also has been reported to produce antinociceptive action on the inflammation- and nerve injury-induced hyperalgesia in the behavioral test. In this study, we investigated the effects of zinc on the responses of dorsal horn cells to NMDA, kainate and graded electrical stimulation of...
