Activation of Akt/protein kinase B mediates the protective effects of mechanical stretching against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury

stretch-activated ion channels (SACs), inhibited the stretch-induced phosphorylation of Akt and GSK-3b. Furthermore, SIC was abrogated by wortmannin and Gd. In vivo stretching induced by an aorto-caval shunt increased Akt phosphorylation and reduced myocardial infarction; these effects were diminished by wortmannin and Gd pretreatment. Our results showed that mechanical stretching can provide cardioprotection against ischemia- reperfusion injury. Additionally, the activation of Akt, which might ... -
The Critical Roles of Zinc: Beyond Impact on Myocardial Signaling
SungRyulLee, SuJinNoh, JuliusRyanPronto, YuJeongJeong, HyoungKyuKim, InSungSong, ZhelongXu, HyogYoungKwon, SeChanKang, Eun-HwaSohn, KyungS 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 12 Pages

Zinc has been considered as a vital constituent of proteins, including enzymes. Mobile reactive zinc (Zn2+) is the key form of zinc involved in signal transductions, which are mainly driven by its binding to proteins or the release of zinc from proteins, possibly via a redox switch. There has been growing evidence of zinc’s critical role in cell signaling, due to its flexible coordination geometry and rapid shifts in protein conformation to perform biological reactions. The importance and... -
The Effects of Ischemic Postconditioning on Myocardial Function and Nitric Oxide Metabolites Following Ischemia-Reperfusion in Hyperthyroid Rats

myocardial IR injury in hyperthyroid male rats. Hyperthyroidism was induced with administration of thyroxine in drinking water (12 mg/L) over a period of 21 days. After thoracotomy, the hearts of control and hyperthyroid rats were perfused in the Langendorff apparatus and subjected to 30 minutes global ischemia, followed by 120 minutes reperfusion; IPost, intermittent early reperfusion, was induced instantly following ischemia. In control rats, IPost significantly improved the left ventricular... -
Korean Red Ginseng Induced Cardioprotection against Myocardial Ischemia in Guinea Pig
KyuHeeLim, Chang-WonKang, Jin-YongChoi, Jong-HoonKim 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2013, Vol.17 No.4 5 283-289 (7 pages)
This study was designed to evaluate the protective effect of Korean red ginseng (KRG) against ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in isolated guinea pig heart. KRG has been shown to possess various ginsenosides, which are the major components of Panax ginseng. These components are known naturally occurring compounds with beneficial effects and free radical scavenging activity. The heart was induced to ischemia for 60 min, followed by 120 min reperfusion. The hearts were randomly allocated into... -
Mechanical Stretch-Induced Protection against Myocardial Ischemia- Reperfusion Injury Involves AMP-Activated Protein Kinase

investigated if the activation of AMPK is involved in stretch-induced cardioprotection (SIC). Intraventricular balloon and aorto-caval shunt (ACS) were used to stretch rat hearts ex vivo and in vivo, respectively. Stretch preconditioning reduced myocardial infarct induced by ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) and improved post-ischemic functional recovery. Phosphorylation of AMPK and its downstream substrate, acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) were increased by mechanical stretch and ACC phosphorylation was... -
Effect of Rosiglitazone on Myocardial Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury in Rat Heart
Ki-ChanHa 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.4 3 181-186 (6 pages)
This study was undertaken to evaluate whether peroxisome proliferator-activated-receptor-gamma (PPAR-γ) agonist-rosiglitazone (ROSI) induces postischemic functional recovery in Langendorf heart model. Hearts isolated from normal rats were subjected to 20 min of normoxia or 25 min zero-flow ischemia followed by 50 min reperfusion. In this acute protocol, ROSI (20μg/ml) administered 10 min before ischemia had no effect on hemodynamic cardiac function, but had protective effect on lipid... -

role in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (MI/R) injury. Moreover, platelets are also important blood cells that can aggravate myocardial ischemic injury. This study was designed to test the effects of PMNs and platelets separately and together in provoking cardiac dysfunction in isolated perfused rat hearts following ischemia and reperfusion. Additional control rat hearts were perfused with 75⁓106 PMNs, with 75⁓106 platelets, or with 75⁓106 PMNs75⁓106 platelets over... -
