Involvement of ROS in Curcumin-induced Autophagic Cell Death
YounJuLee, Nam-YiKim, Young-AhSuh, ChuHeeLee 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages

a crucial role in various disorders. In HCT116 human colon cancer cells, we found that curcumin, a polyphenolic phytochemical extracted from the plant Curcuma longa, markedly induced the conversion of microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3)-I to LC3-II and degradation of sequestome-1 (SQSTM1) which is a marker of autophagosome degradation. Moreover, we found that curcumin caused GFP-LC3 formation puncta, a marker of autophagosome, and decrease of GFP-LC3 and SQSTM1 protein level in... -
Gender-Related Differences in a Process of the Age-Dependent Alterations of the Elements in Monkey Sino-Atrial Node

Gender differences in the trace elements of monkey sino-atrial (SA) node were investigated in a process of age-dependent alterations. Sixty hearts from Japanese and rhesus monkeys (30 male and 30 female) used were aged ranging from 1-day- to 30-year-old. The elements were analyzed using an inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometer (ICP-AES). Advancing age decreased all the trace elements. Ca, P, S and Mg significantly decreased. The correlation coefficients of Ca and P were... -
Hexane-Soluble Fraction of the Common Fig, Ficus carica, Inhibits Osteoclast Differentiation in Murine Bone Marrow-Derived Macrophages and RAW 264.7 Cells

Osteoclasts, derived from multipotent myeloid progenitor cells, play homeostatic roles in skeletal modeling and remodeling, but may also destroy bone in pathological conditions such as osteoporosis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoclast development depends critically on a differentiation factor, the receptor activator of NF-ՊB ligand (RANKL). In this study, we found that the hexane soluble fraction of the common fig Ficus carica (HF6-FC) is a potent inhibitor of osteoclastogenesis in... -
Expression of Endothelin-1 and Its Receptors in Cisplatin-Induced Acute Renal Failure in Mice
SeokwooLee, DowhanAhn 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2008, Vol.12 No.4 4 149-154 (6 pages)
Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is unequivocally elevated in the kidney with ischemic acute renal failure (ARF), whereas ET receptors (ETAR and ETBR) are variably expressed. Although renal functional and structural changes are similar between ischemic and nephrotoxic ARF, there are few reports on the alteration in the ET system in nephrotoxic ARF. This study was, therefore, undertaken to investigate changes in renal expression of ET-1 and its receptors in nephrotoxic ARF induced by cisplatin. Mice were... -
Effects of Antioxidants on the Gamma-Radiation Damage of the Cultured Vascular Smooth Mucle Cells of Rat Aorta
Jong-DooLee, Hyoung-ChulChoi, Young-JinKang, Myung-SeKim, Kwang-YounLee 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2007, Vol.11 No.5 5 189-195 (7 pages)
To study the protective effects of antioxidants on the radiation damages of the cells, vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) from thoracic aorta of Sprague-Dawley rats were cultured and irradiated with gamma-ray. Cell viability was measured by direct cell counting and MTT assay, and flow cytometry was performed to measure fractional distributions of the cells. Gamma-ray irradiation inhibited cell proliferations accompanied with decreased G1 phase and increased S- and G2/M phases, and the maximum... -
Effects of R. Glutinosa and E. Senticosus on Postmenopausal Osteoporosis

in the CaD and RE groups, however, there was significant difference only between the placebo and RE groups (p<0.05). These findings suggest that continuous oral therapy of the RE formulation reduces rapidly decreasing bone mineral density in postmenopausal women more effectively than high doses of calcium and vitamin D3 alone by inhibiting osteoclastic activity. Therefore, it seems that the RE has its own antiosteoporotic effects. We suggest larger clinical... -
Induction of Heme Oxygenase-1 by Traditional Herb Mix Extract Improves MKN-74 Cell Survival and Reduces Stomach Bleeding in Rats by Ethanol and Aspirin in vivo

ulcer, protects stomach from oxidative stress. Rats were allowed to normal diet with and without HMX (1, 5, 10 mg/kg) for 30 days. To induce gastric ulcer, ethanol (75%, 1.5 ml) or acidified aspirin (100 mg/kg in 0.2 N HCl) was administered by oral route in 24 h-fasted rats and examined the gastric ulceration (bleeding) by measuring the size 1 h after the treatment. Results indicated the area of gastric bleeding was significantly less in HMX fed rats than in normal diet fed ones, and it was... -
Inhibition of Nitric Oxide-induced Neuronal Apoptosis in PC12 Cells by Epigallocatechin Gallate
JiYeonJung, YeonJinJeong, ChangRyoungHan, SunHunKim, HyunJinKim, KiHeonLee, HaOkPark, WonJaeKim 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages

In the central nervous system, nitric oxide (NO) is associated with many pathological diseases such as brain ischemia, neurodegeneration and inflammation. The epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), a major compound of green tea, is recognized as protective substance against neuronal diseases. This study is aimed to investigate the effect of EGCG on NO-induced cell death in PC12 cells. Administration of sodium nitroprusside (SNP), a NO donor, decreased cell viability in a dose- and time-dependent... -
Inhibition of Hypoxia-induced Apoptosis in PC12 Cells by Estradiol

Neuronal apoptotic events, which result in cell death, are occurred in hypoxic/ischemic conditions. Estradiol is a female sex hormone with steroid structure known to provide neuroprotection through multiple mechanisms in the central nervous system. This study was aimed to investigate the signal transduction pathway of CoCl2-induced neuronal cell death and the inhibitory effects of estradiol. Administration of CoCl2 decreased cell viability in both a dose- and time-dependent manner in PC12 cells.... -
Preventive Effect of Serotonergic Drugs on LPS-Induced Acute Anorexia in Rats

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.3 3 149-154 (6 pages)
The aim of the present study was to determine whether serotonergic drugs could reverse lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced anorexia in rats. LPS (500μg/kg body weight) and all serotonergic drugs, except for 8-OH-DPAT (subcutaneous), were injected intraperitoneally into Sprague-Dawley rats. Without the LPS injection, 8-OH-DPAT (1A agonist), metergoline (1/2 antagonist), and mianserin (2A/2C antagonist) exerted no effects on food intake at any of the doses tested, but ketanserin (2A antagonist)...
