Forskolin Enhances Synaptic Transmission in Rat Dorsal Striatum through NMDA Receptors and PKA in Different Phases
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2008, Vol.12 No.6 2 293-298 (6 pages)
The effect of forskolin on corticostriatal synaptic transmission was examined by recording excitatory postsynaptic currents (EPSCs) in rat brain slices using the whole-cell voltage-clamp technique. Forskolin produced a dose-dependent increase of corticostriatal EPSCs (1, 3, 10, and 30ՌM) immediately after its treatment, and the increase at 10 and 30ՌM was maintained even after its washout. When the brain slices were pre-treated with <FONT SIZE=2>(DL)-2-amino-5-phosphonovaleric... -

The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2008, Vol.12 No.4 6 165-170 (6 pages)
In the present study, we aimed to identify the synergistic effects of concurrent treatment of low concentrations of cilostazol and probucol to inhibit the oxidative stress with suppression of inflammatory markers in the cultured human coronary artery endothelial cells (HCAECs). Combination of cilostazol (0.3∼3ՌM) with probucol (0.03∼0.3ՌM) significantly suppressed TNF-Ձ-stimulated NAD(P)H-dependent superoxide, lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced intracellular reactive oxygen... -
Attenuated Sympathetic Activity and Its Relation to Obesity in MSG Injected and Sympathectomized Rats
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 7 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2007, Vol.11 No.4 4 155-161 (7 pages)
In order to characterize the role of sympathetic activity in obesity, we repeatedly assessed sympathetic activity via power spectral analyses of heart rate variability in the same subjects at 7, 11, 25, and 60 weeks, using monosodium glutamate (MSG)-induced obese and control rats. The effects of lower sympathetic activity on obesity were also evaluated. Fat mass in MSG rats was already higher at 7 weeks, but the sympathetic activity did not differ between 7 and 25 weeks. Between 25 and 60 weeks,... -
NMDA Receptor-dependent Inhibition of Synaptic Transmission by Acute Ethanol Treatment in Rat Corticostriatal Slices
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.6 2 303-308 (6 pages)
The effects of ethanol on corticostriatal synaptic transmission were examined, using extracellular recording and analysis of population spike amplitudes in rat brain slices, to study how acute ethanol intoxication impairs striatal function. Ethanol caused a decrease in population spike amplitudes in a dose dependent manner (50∼200 mM). Pretreatment with picrotoxin, a γ-amino butyric acid (GABA)A receptor antagonist, increased the population spikes but ethanol (100 mM) was still effective in... -
Estrogen Pretreatment of Organotypic Hippocampal Slices Protects Neurons against Oxygen-Glucose Deprivation with Akt Activation
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.3 2 123-130 (8 pages)
In several experimental models, estrogens protect neurons against ischemic insults. However, the recent clinical studies of hormone replacement showed negative results to prevent stroke. Therefore, optimal models to study estrogen replacement for neuroprotection are needed before its clinical application. Organotypic hippocampal slice under oxygen-glucose deprivation (OGD) has been established as a model of cerebral ischemia and has advantages to study drug effects. We investigated whether... -
Fluoxetine Modulates Corticostriatal Synaptic Transmission through Postsynaptic Mechanism
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.1 6 31-38 (8 pages)
Fluoxetine, widely used for the treatment of depression, is known to be a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), however, there are also reports that fluoxetine has direct effects on several receptors. Employing whole-cell patch clamp techniques in rat brain slice, we studied the effects of fluoxetine on corticostriatal synaptic transmission by measuring the change in spontaneous excitatory postsynaptic currents (sEPSC). Acute treatment of rat brain slice with fluoxetine (10μM)... -
Changes of Cytosolic Ca2+ under Metabolic Inhibition in Isolated Rat Ventricular Myocytes

Striatum has important roles in motor control, habitual learning and memory. It receives glutamatergic inputs from neocortex and thalamus, and dopaminergic inputs from substantia nigra. We examined effects of dopamine (DA) on the corticostriatal synaptic transmission using in vitro extracellular recording technique in rat brain corticostriatal slices. Synaptic responses were elicited by stimulation of cortical glutamatergic inputs on the corpus callosum and recorded in the dorsal striatum.... -
5-Hydroxytryptamine Inhibits Glutamatergic Synaptic Transmission in Rat Corticostriatal Brain Slice

People in tropics have the ability to tolerate heat by residential permanence in the tropics. Previously, we have shown that African and Thai subjects who lived for whole their lives in only their respective countries sweat less under hot conditions than South Koreans who also lived whole their lives in Korea. The difference in sweating responses was attributed to the dissimilar central and peripheral sweating mechanisms operating in people from both groups. In the present study, acetylcholine...
