The influence of alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) on the bone marrow (BM) natural suppressor (NS) cells of intact Ehrlich carcinoma -bearing CBA mice was studied. Bone marrow NS cells were fractionated into three fractions by isopycnic centrifugation on percoll gradients: NS1 (Ց=1.080 g/ml), NS2 (Ց=1.090 g/ml) and NS3 (1.100>Ց>1.090 g/ml). These fractions were highly different in their sensitivity to known NS cell inductors (interleukin (IL)-2, IL-3 or histamine). None of the NS... -

Lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC), a metabolite of membrane phospholipids by phospholipase A2, has been considered responsible for the development of abnormal vascular reactivity during atherosclerosis. Ca2+ influx was shown to be augmented in atherosclerotic artery which might be responsible for abnormal vascular reactivity. However, the mechanism underlying Ca2+ influx change in atherosclerotic artery remains undetermined. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of LPC on... -

Tropical natives (TROP) are capable of tolerating tropical heat because of their long-term adaptation to tropical environments. When exposed to heat stress, these natives tend to respond with lower sweat output, which is generally thought to be the result of heat acclimatization. The main objective of this study was to clarify central mechanisms inherent to suppressed thermal sweating in tropical natives (Malaysians) by comparing their sweating responses to those of temperate native (TEMP)... -

In order to characterize the role of sympathetic activity in obesity, we repeatedly assessed sympathetic activity via power spectral analyses of heart rate variability in the same subjects at 7, 11, 25, and 60 weeks, using monosodium glutamate (MSG)-induced obese and control rats. The effects of lower sympathetic activity on obesity were also evaluated. Fat mass in MSG rats was already higher at 7 weeks, but the sympathetic activity did not differ between 7 and 25 weeks. Between 25 and 60 weeks,... -

a placebo or high dose calcium and vitamin D3 (CaD). Bone mineral density (BMD) in the L2-3 lumber spines and femur regions was assessed, and serum osteocalcin, bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BALP), and cross-linked N-telopeptide of type I collagen (NTx) were used as markers of osteoblast and osteoclast activity. Furthermore, all variables were measured before and after 6 and 12 months of treatment. The osteocalcin level was higher in the RE group, and BALP was almost the same... -
Gene Expression Profile in Microglia following Ischemia- Reperfusion Injury

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2006, Vol.10 No.4 2 173-180 (8 pages)
Microglial activation is thought to play a role in the pathogenesis of many brain disorders. Therefore, understanding the response of microglia to noxious stimuli may provide insights into their role in disorders such as stroke and neurodegeneration. Many genes involved in this response have been identified individually, but not systematically. In this regards, the microarray system permitted to screen a large number of genes in biological or pathological processes. Therefore, we used microarray... -
Cytotoxicological Effect of Tebufenozide, an Insect Growth Regulator (IGR): Stimulation of Filamentous Actin Reorganization and Enhancement of Hsp27 Expression in Drosophila Kc Cells

The cytotoxicological responses to insect growth regulator (IGR), using tebufenozide as ecdysteroid mimic, were investigated in Drosophila Kc cells. Treatment of Kc cells with tebufenozide showed significant growth inhibition and striking morphological changes including aggregation and elongation of the cells. In order to understand the cellular mechanism underlying the response of Drosophila cells to tebufenozide, immunofluorescence microscopy was performed. We found that treatment of Kc cells... -
Hyperthermia-induced Apoptosis is Independent upon DNA Strand Breaks in Human Lymphoid Cells
HwaJinJung, WonHyeKa, JeeNaHwang, YoungRokSeo 대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2004, Vol.8 No.6 9 345-350 (6 pages)
Heat shock (43oC for 60 minutes) is sufficient to induce apoptosis in a wide number of cell lines. In this study, we asked whether DNA strand breaks are responsible for this phenomenon. Using the highly sensitive comet assay for DNA damage detection, we were unable to demonstrate DNA breaks immediately after heat shock in Raji human lymphoid cells. It showed that DNA breaks were not necessary for hyperthermic apoptosis, since its activity is indicative of DNA lesions. Here, we present a... -
Economical Sweating Function in Africans: Quantitative Sudomotor Axon Reflex Test

대한생리학회-대한약리학회 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2004, Vol.8 No.1 4 21-25 (5 pages)
People in tropics have the ability to tolerate heat by residential permanence in the tropics. Previously, we have shown that African and Thai subjects who lived for whole their lives in only their respective countries sweat less under hot conditions than South Koreans who also lived whole their lives in Korea. The difference in sweating responses was attributed to the dissimilar central and peripheral sweating mechanisms operating in people from both groups. In the present study, acetylcholine... -
Postischemic Treatment with Aminoguanidine Inhibits Peroxynitrite Production in the Peroxynitrite Production in the Rat Hippocampus Following Transient Forebrain Ischemia

Transient forebrain ischemia results in the delayed neuronal death in the CA1 area of the hippocampus. The present study was performed to determine effects of aminoguanidine, a selective iNOS inhibitor, on the generation of peroxynitrite and delayed neuronal death occurring in the hippocampus following transient forebrain ischemia. Transient forebrain ischemia was produced in the conscious rats by four-vessel occlusion for 10 min. Treatment with aminoguanidine (100 mg/kg or 200 mg/kg, i.p.) or...
