cat spinal cord. After identifying WDR cells, their responses to peripheral noxious mechanical or thermal stimuli were characterized and the effects of SOM and Mor, applied either iontophoretically or intrathecally, were studied. In most cells SOM and Mor suppressed noxious stimulus-evoked WDR neuronal activity, though a few WDR neurons showed no change or were excited by SOM and Mor. Systemically applied naloxone, a non-specific opioid antagonist, always reversed the Mor induced suppression of... -
Blockade of Intrinsic Oscillatory Activity of Cerebellar Purkinje Cells by Apamin and Nickel

blocking action on the post-burst hyperpolarization before it blocked oscillatory activity. Ni2 blocked an inward current at potentials positive to approximately 65 mV, which was responsible for the ZSR region and outward current at more negative potentials. These data indicated that oscillatory activity of PCs is sustained by a balance between a slow Ni2-sensitive inward current and an apamin-sensitive outward current in the region of ZSR of the whole-cell I/V curve. -
Immunochemical Studies for the Characterization of Purified(Na+, K+)-ATPase and Its Subunits with a Special Reference of Their Effect on Monovalent Cation Transport in Reconstituted (Na+, K+)-ATPase Vesicles

inhibit the coupled counter-transport of Na+ and K+ as studied by means of dual labeling experiments. However, this inhibitory effect of the antibodies on transport of ions in the (Na+, K+)-ATPase vesicles is manifested only on the portion of energy and temperature dependent alkali metal fluxes, not on the portion of ATP and ouabain insensitive ion movement. Simultaneous determination of effects of the antibodies on ion fluxes and vesicular catalytic activity indicates that an inhibition of acti... -
Effects of Systemic and Focal Hypoxia on the Activities of Rostral Ventrolateral Medullary Neurons in Cats

by iontophoresed sodium cyanide and of twenty-five respiration related cells, fourteen cells were excited by iontophoresed sodium cyanide. Remaining cells were either inhibited or unaffected. Eight of fifteen cells tested with iontophoresed sodium lactate were excited and remaining seven cells were inhibited. Systemic hypoxia induced by nitrogen gas inhalation elevated the arterial blood pressure, but excited, inhibited or unaffected the single neuronal activities. Some cells showed initial... -
Transepithelial Transport of Organic Cation and Its Inhibition by Sulfhydryl and Carboxyl Reagents in Opossum Kidney Cell Monolayer

TEA self-exchange mechanism was involved at the apical membrane. Sulfhydryl reagents such as {\rho}-chloromercuribenzoic acid (PCMB) and ρ-chloro-mercuribenzene sulfonate (PCMBS) and carboxyl reagents such as N,N -dicyclohexylcarbodiimidem (DCCD) and N-ethoxy-carbonyl-2-ethoxy-1,2-dihydro-quinoline(EEDQ) inhibited the TEA transport at both the basolateral and apical membranes of the OK cell monolayer. These results suggest that OK cell monolayers possess a vectorial transport system for organ... -
Effects of Morphine on Somatosyrnpathetic Reflex and Arterial Blood Pressure Response Evoked by Stimulation of Peripheral Nerves

of the peripheral Aδ- and C-afferent nerves were analyzed. The following results were obtained. 1) Arterial blood pressure was depressed by peripheral Aδ-afferent stimulation (A-response) and was elevated during C-afferent activation (C-response). 2) Intravenously administered morphine enhanced the C-response while the A-response decreased insignificantly, Only the C-response was decreased by intrathecal morphine. 3) All the ten recorded cutaneous sympathetic fibers showed periodic discharge... -
Enhanced Expression of Angiotensinogen mRNA in Rat Central and Peripheral Tissues Following Hemorrhage

level at 24 hr. On the other hand, angiotensinogen mRNA levels il the hypothalamus and brainstem were continuously increased from 2 to 24 hrs. The present study demonstrates the presence of angiotensinogen mRNA in both hepatic and extrahepatic tissues, and more importantly, their up-regulation after hemorrhage. These results suggest that the angiotensinogen-generating systems in the liver, kideny and brain are, at least in part, under independent control and play a local physiological role. -
Rapid Measurement of NH3 and Weak Acid Permeation Through Liposomes and Renal Proximal Tubule Membranes

of nonionized formic acid and initial rate of flux of formic acid in liposome, and the slope coincided with the value of permeability coefficient of formic acid measured in pH 7.0. These results show that techniques of stopped-flow and epifluorescence microscopy with entrapped fluorophore provide the precise method of measurement of very rapid transport of nonelectrolytes through membranes with the advantages of instantaneous mixing effect, good resolution time and easy manipulation. -
Ionic Dependence and Modulatory Factors of the Background Current Activated by Isoprenaline in Rabbit Ventricular Cells

μm ouabain, and 20 mM tetraethylammonium(TEA). The conductance of background current in control was 0.65±0.69 nS at 0 mV, its I-V curves was almost linear and reversed near 50 mV. When there was no taurine in pipette solution, isoprenaline hardly activated the background current but when taurine existed in pipette solution, isoprenaline activated the larger background current. Cyclic AMP or cyclic GMP alone had little effect on the activation of the background current, while cGMP potentiated... -
A Review of the Potency of Plant Extracts and Compounds from Key Families as an Alternative to Synthetic Nematicides: History, Efficacy, and Current Developments

efficacy, potency and composition continue to persist, and commercialization of new botanical nematicides is still lagging. Herein, we have reviewed the history of botanical nematicides and regional progresses, the potency of the identified phytochemicals from the key important plant families, and deciphered some of the impediments involved in standardization of the active compounds in addition to the concerns over the safety of the purified compounds to non-target microbial communities.
