A Review of the Potency of Plant Extracts and Compounds from Key Families as an Alternative to Synthetic Nematicides: History, Efficacy, and Current Developments
Abraham Okki Mwamula, Md. Faisal Kabir, DongWoon Lee 한국식물병리학회 The Plant Pathology Journal 25 Pages
한국식물병리학회 The Plant Pathology Journal 2022, 38권 2호 1 53-77 (25 pages)
The global nematicides market is expected to continue growing. With an increasing demand for synthetic chemical-free organic foods, botanical nematicides are taking the lead as replacements. Consequently, in the recent years, there have been vigorous efforts towards identification of the active secondary metabolites from various plants. These include mostly glucosinolates and their hydrolysis products such as isothiocyanates; flavonoids, alkaloids, limonoids, quassinoids, saponins, and the more... -
Biocontrol Activity of Aspergillus terreus ANU-301 against Two Distinct Plant Diseases, Tomato Fusarium Wilt and Potato Soft Rot
Hyong Woo Choi, S. M. Ahsan 한국식물병리학회 The Plant Pathology Journal 13 Pages
한국식물병리학회 The Plant Pathology Journal 2022, 38권 1호 4 33-45 (13 pages)
To screen antagonistic fungi against plant pathogens, dual culture assay (DCA) and culture filtrate assay (CFA) were performed with unknown soil-born fungi. Among the different fungi isolated and screened from the soil, fungal isolate ANU-301 successfully inhibited growth of different plant pathogenic fungi, Colletotri- chum acutatum, Alternaria alternata, and Fusarium oxysporum, in DCA and CFA. Morphological character- istics and rDNA internal transcribed spacer sequence analysis identified... -
Evaluation of Antimicrobial Properties of Lichen Substances against Plant Pathogens

Plant pathogens pose major threats on agriculture and horticulture, causing significant economic loss worldwide. Due to the continuous and excessive use of synthetic pesticides, emergence of pesticide resistant pathogens has become more frequent. Thus, there is a growing needs for environmentally-friendly and selective antimicrobial agents with a novel mode of action, which may be used in combination with conventional pesticides to delay development of pesticide resistance. In this study, we... -

root knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita). In vitro antagonistic assays revealed that SS31 spore suspensions and culture broths effectively suppressed the growth of R. solani, reduced nematode egg hatching, and increased juvenile mortality. Assays using two Petri dishes revealed that LTM-m produced volatile compounds to inhibit the growth of R. solani and cause mortality to the root knot nematode eggs and juveniles. Pot and greenhouse tests showed that application of 0.08% LTM-m could achieve a... -
Control Efficacy of Bacillus velezensis AFB2-2 against Potato Late Blight Caused by Phytophthora infestans in Organic Potato Cultivation
Min Jeong Kim, Chang Ki Shim, Jong-Ho Park 한국식물병리학회 The Plant Pathology Journal 16 Pages
한국식물병리학회 The Plant Pathology Journal 2021, 37권 6호 8 580-595 (16 pages)
Although late blight is an important disease in eco- friendly potato cultivation in Korea, it is highly depen- dent on the use of eco-friendly agricultural materials and the development of biological control technology is low. It is a necessary to develop an effective biocontrol agent to inactivate late blight in the field. AFB2-2 strain is a gram-positive with peritrichous flagella. It can uti- lize 20 types of carbon sources, like L-arabinose, and D- trehalose at 35°C. The optimal growth... -

of bacterial fruit blotch, have been proven to be effective for the prevention and control of this disease. However, the occurrence of bacteriophage-resistant bacteria is one of hurdles in phage biocontrol and the understanding of phage resistance in this bacterium is an essential step. In this study, we aim to investigate possible phage resistance of A. citrulli and relation- ship between phage resistance and pathogenicity, and to isolate and characterize the genes involved in these phenomena.... -
Bio-control of Stem Rot in Jerusalem Artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus L.) in Field Conditions
Chutsuda Junsopa, Weerasak Saksirirat, Suwita Saepaisan, Patcharin Songsri, Thawan Kesmala, Barbara B. Shew, Sanun Jogloy 한국식물병리학회 The Plant Pathology Journal 9 Pages
한국식물병리학회 The Plant Pathology Journal 2021, 37권 5호 2 428-436 (9 pages)
Stem rot is a serious disease in Jerusalem artichoke (JA). To reduce the impact of this disease on yield and quality farmers often use fungicides, but this control method can be expensive and leave chemical residues. The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of two biological control agents, Trichoderma harzia- num T9 and Bacillus firmus BSR032 for control of Scle- rotium rolfsii under field conditions. Four accessions of JA (HEL246, HEL65, JA47, and JA12) were treated or... -
The Plant-Stress Metabolites, Hexanoic Aacid and Melatonin, Are Potential “Vaccines” for Plant Health Promotion
Anne J. Anderson, Young Cheol Kim 한국식물병리학회 The Plant Pathology Journal 13 Pages

A plethora of compounds stimulate protective mecha- nisms in plants against microbial pathogens and abiotic stresses. Some defense activators are synthetic com- pounds and trigger responses only in certain protective pathways, such as activation of defenses under regula- tion by the plant regulator, salicylic acid (SA). This review discusses the potential of naturally occurring plant metabolites as primers for defense responses in the plant. The production of the metabolites, hexanoic acid and... -
Comparison of Bacterial Community of Healthy and Erwinia amylovora Infected Apples

Fire blight disease, caused by Erwinia amylovora, could damage rosaceous plants such as apples, pears, and raspberries. In this study, we designed to understand how E. amylovora affected other bacterial communities on apple rhizosphere; twig and fruit endosphere; and leaf, and fruit episphere. Limited studies on the understanding of the microbial community of apples and changes the community structure by occurrence of the fire blight disease were conducted. As result of these experiments, the... -

The use of the supernatant from a Bacillus subtilis culture mixed with sodium bicarbonate was explored as a means of controlling stem brown spot disease in dragon fruit plants. In in vitro experiments, the B. subtilis supernatant used with sodium bicarbonate showed a strong inhibition effect on the growth of the fungus, Neoscytalidium dimidiatum, the agent causing stem brown spot disease and was notably effective in preventing fungal invasion of dragon fruit plant. This combination not only...
