Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 22 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2021, Vol.15 No.2 12 257-278 (22 pages)
South Korean ECEC has been transformed by dynamic socio-economic and political changes. In these changes, the Korean culture as it is embedded in ECEC is continuously being retranslated and reshaped in the new, and ever-changing context by means of globalization and from those who travel abroad and bring back new ideas. Previous research is limited in that it fails to connect broader Korean cultural and societal changes to changes in ECEC over time. In this paper we illustrate the history of... -
The Impact of Music Pedagogy Education on Early Childhood Teachers’ Self-Efficacy in Teaching Music: The Study of a Music Teacher Education Program in Hong Kong
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 24 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2021, Vol.15 No.2 4 63-86 (24 pages)
Previous studies have suggested that teacher education plays a crucial role in developing pedagogical knowledge and enthusiasm in teaching music. Based on Bandura’s (1977) self-efficacy framework, this study sought to investigate the impact of music teacher education program on self-perceived confidence and competence of 32 in-service early childhood teachers. Adopting a mixed methods approach, the Music Teaching Self-Efficacy Survey (MTSES) was the main source of quantitative data, whereas... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 24 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2021, Vol.15 No.1 9 157-180 (24 pages)
This article describes the results of visiting Choblong?a rural village near Bogor, one of the most dynamic cities in West Java, Indonesia. The purpose of our visit was to (re)introduce the concept of storytelling to parents and promote long-forgotten local folktales and character education. The hope was that the parents would enjoy this approach in the long run and use local stories and history to teach skills, develop a close relationship with their children, and support an oral storytelling... -

Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 24 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2020, Vol.14 No.2 7 135-158 (24 pages)
The development of children’s emotional competence (EC) throughout the preschool period is critical for supporting their future social competence, transition to school and long-term academic success. This paper reports on survey responses of 78 Australian preschool educators to the scale Preschool Educators’ Readiness for Promoting Children’s Emotional Competence modified from Bouillet, Ivanec & Miljević-Riđički (2014) and a short open response section. This scale sought the views... -

was used. Using propositions from Bourdieu’s habitus theory and Wenger’s community of practice theory, pre-service teachers ‘narratives were analysed to find out how they construct professional teacher identity. From the findings, they constructed professional teacher identity using dispositions influenced from their personal histories, personal attributes (beliefs and values), prior experiences and teacher education. These findings have implications for teacher education programmes. -
Student Teachers’ Perception of Reflective Journal Writing in Placement Practicum: Experience from a Hong Kong Institution
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 25 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2020, Vol.14 No.2 2 27-51 (25 pages)
The paper aims to research kindergarten student teachers’ perceptions of reflective journal writing and its role in fieldwork placement within the context of Hong Kong. To respond to their professional growth, student teachers use reflective journal writing as an essential assignment in early childhood education because it gives them the opportunity to explore the understanding they have gained in a specific context of fieldwork placement practices. Nevertheless, the quality of reflection is... -

in Australia were interviewed and asked about their knowledge and beliefs regarding bilingualism. Results showed bilingual educators to be more positive and knowledgeable about bilingualism. All educators acknowledged challenges of not being able to communicate with children and their families as they did not speak any English. Participants in this study appeared to have limited knowledge of the nature of bilingualism and had varying beliefs around how to best support bilingual children. The... -
Inclusive Education and Communication Impairment in Early Childhood: A Perspective from Japan
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 15 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2019, Vol.13 No.3 2 9-23 (15 pages)
In this article I argue that notions from special education research in the West, such as individualized education and early intervention, are increasingly globally pervasive but may not be taken up in expected ways. I share a close read of an interview I conducted with a preschool director in Japan, exploring her perspectives on intervention for children with mild communication impairments. In an analysis of our conversation, I explore themes of purposeful restraint from intervention,... -
Multiple Representations in Preschool Numeracy: Teaching a Lesson on More-or-Less
Alfredo Bautista, Malikka Habib, Raymond Ong, Anthony Eng, Rebecca Bull 환태평양유아교육연구학회 Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 28 Pages
Asia-Pacific journal of research in early childhood education 2019, Vol.13 No.2 6 95-122 (28 pages)
Mathematics education researchers and curriculum designers have emphasized the importance of representations in fostering students’ mathematical learning. However, most classroom-based studies on representations have focused on primary and secondary levels, and there is limited literature on how preschool teachers integrate representations in regular classroom activities. This qualitative study illustrates specific ways in which preschool educators may utilize multiple representations to teach... -

to a large extent, by variations in educator pedagogy and practice. We argue for a better understanding of how ECEC educators and services can achieve (and be supported to optimise) children’s development and learning outcomes. This paper argues for more rigorous PD designs, considered evidence-based content and delivery that are embedded within a rich evidence-base of practice, and that focus on educator effectiveness, practice change, and also on the benefits to children’s learning and...
