of rice are grown. RSV is transmitted by the small brown plant-hopper (SBPH) in a persistent and circulative-propagative manner. Several methods have been developed for detection of RSV, which is composed of four single-stranded RNAs that encode seven proteins. Genome sequence data and comparative phylogenetic analysis have been used to identify the origin and diversity of RSV isolates. Several rice varieties resistant to RSV have been selected and QTL analysis and fine mapping have been... -
The Complete Genome Sequence of Southern rice black-streaked dwarf virus Isolated from Vietnam

11 428-432 (5 pages)
a Vietnamese isolate of Southern rice black-streaked dwarf virus (SRBSDV). Whole genome comparisons and phylogenetic analysis showed that the genome of the Vietnamese isolate shared high nucleotide sequence identities of over 97.5% with those of the reported Chinese isolates, confirming a common origin of them. Moreover, the greatest divergence between different SRBSDV isolates was found in the segments S1, S3, S4 and S6, which differs from the sequence alignment results between SRBSDV and Rice... -
Effect of Foliar and Root Application of Silicon Against Rice Blast Fungus in MR219 Rice Variety
The Plant Pathology Journal 8 Pages
5 164-171 (8 pages)
Rice blast disease caused by Magnaporthe grisea (Hebert) Barr [teleomorph] is one of the most devastating diseases in rice plantation areas. Silicon is considered as a useful element for a large variety of plants. Rice variety MR219 was grown in the glasshouse to investigate the function of silicon in conferring resistance against blast. Silica gel was applied to soil while sodium silicate was used as foliar spray at the rates of 0, 60, 120, 180 g/5 kg soil and 0, 1, 2, 3 ml/l respectively. The... -
Research Articles : Effect of Rice stripe virus NS3 on Transient Gene Expression and Transgene Co-Silencing
The Plant Pathology Journal 5 Pages
2 310-314 (5 pages)
Rice stripe virus (RSV), known to be a suppressor of gene silencing, was cloned and sequenced. The cloned NS3 gene is composed of 636 nucleotides encoding 211 deduced amino acids, and showed a high degree of similarity with the equivalent genes isolated from Korea, Japan and China. The NS3 gene promoted the enhancement of transient gene expression and suppressed transgene co-silencing. In the transient GFP expression via agroinfiltration, GFP expression was dramatically enhanced in terms of both... -
Isolation and Characterization of Rice OsHRL Gene Related to Bacterial Blight Resistance
The Plant Pathology Journal 4 Pages
17 417-420 (4 pages)
The expression of HR-like lesion inducing gene of Oryza sativa (OsHRL) was slightly increased by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) infection. Transgenic rice plants over-expressing OsHRL gene were challenged with Xoo and the development of disease symptoms were examined to investigate the effect of OsHRL gene expression on plant defense responses. The over-expression of OsHRL increased disease resistance against Xoo compared with wild type plants. -
Population Structure of Fusarium graminearum from Maize and Rice in 2009 in Korea
The Plant Pathology Journal 7 Pages
4 321-327 (7 pages)
F. graminearum isolates from maize and rice samples collected in 2009 in Korea. PCR using a species-specific primer set revealed a total of 324 isolates belonging to the putative F. graminearum species complex. PCR with trichothecene chemotypespecific primers revealed that the nivalenol (NIV) chemotype was predominant among the fungal isolates from rice (95%) in all provinces examined. In contrast, the predominant chemotype among the corn isolates varied according to region. The deoxynivalenol... -
Genetic Stability of Magnaporthe oryzae during Successive Passages through Rice Plants and on Artificial Medium
The Plant Pathology Journal 8 Pages
3 313-320 (8 pages)
Genetic instability of the rice blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae has been suggested as a major factor underlying the rapid breakdown of host resistance in the field. However, little information is available on the mechanism of genetic instability. In this study, we assessed the stability of repetitive DNA elements and several key phenotypic traits important for pathogenesis after serially transferring two isolates though rice plants and an artificial medium. Using isolate 70-15, we obtained a... -
Occurrence of Burkholderia glumae on Rice and Field Crops in Korea
The Plant Pathology Journal 2 Pages
11 271-272 (2 pages)
Burkholderia glumae causes bacterial rice grain rot and bacterial wilt on many field crops. We developed a simple diagnostic streak method for the isolation of B. glumae from diseased plant material. The geographical distribution of 178 Korean isolates shows that B. glumae is widely spread in South Korea. -
Phenotypic and Genotypic Analysis of Rice Lesion Mimic Mutants

in the rice LMMs were controlled by both development stages and environmental factors. The rice LMMs exhibited higher numbers of spots under 45oC temperature than those under 30oC. Contents of chlorophyll were drastically reduced at 60 days old LMM leaves when the spot formation was severe. The levels of endogenous hydrogen peroxide were highest at 45 days old mutants but reduced at 60 days old. Transcription levels of stress related genes including thioredoxin peroxidase and protein disulfide... -
The WRKY Superfamily of Rice Transcription Factors
The Plant Pathology Journal 5 Pages
2 110-114 (5 pages)
WRKY transcription factors are known to be involved in many different biological processes including plant response to biotic stress, abiotic stress, and plant development. WRKY proteins are extensively studied in Arabidopsis. Recently, reports on WRKY proteins are rapidly increasing in the other plant species, especially in rice. Therefore, this review will discuss the function of rice WRKY proteins reported so far.
