N-acetyl-L-cysteine and cysteine increase intracellular calcium concentration in human neutrophils
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2016, Vol.20 No.5 2 449-457 (9 pages)
N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) and cysteine have been implicated in a number of human neutrophils’ functional responses. However, though Ca2+ signaling is one of the key signalings contributing to the functional responses of human neutrophils, effects of NAC and cysteine on intracellular calcium concentration ([Ca2+]?) in human neutrophils have not been investigated yet. Thus, this study was carried out with an objective to investigate the effects of NAC and cysteine on [Ca2+]? in human neutrophils.... -

The increased potential for vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) growth is a key abnormality in the development of atherosclerosis and post-angioplasty restenosis. Abnormally high activity of plate-let-derived growth factor (PDGF) is believed to play a central role in the etiology of these pathophy-siological situations. Here, we investigated the anti-proliferative effects and possible mechanism(s) of murrayafoline A, a carbazole alkaloid isolated from Glycosmis stenocarpa Guillamin (Rutaceae), on... -
Zerumbone, Sesquiterpene Photochemical from Ginger, Inhibits Angiogenesis

The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2015, Vol.19 No.4 5 335-340 (6 pages)
Here, we investigated the role of zerumbone, a natural cyclic sesquiterpene of Zingiber zerumbet Smith, on angiogenesis using human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Zerumbone inhibited HUVECs proliferation, migration and tubule formation, as well as angiogenic activity by rat aorta explants. In particular, zerumbone inhibited phosphorylation of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-2 and fibroblast growth factor receptor-1, which are key regulators of endothelial cell function... -
Exendin-4 Improves Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease by Regulating Glucose Transporter 4 Expression in ob/ob Mice

Exendin-4 (Ex-4), a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor (GLP-1R) agonist, has been known to reverse hepatic steatosis in ob/ob mice. Although many studies have evaluated molecular targets of Ex-4, its mechanism of action on hepatic steatosis and fibrosis has not fully been determined. In the liver, glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) is mainly expressed in hepatocytes, endothelial cells and hepatic stellate cells (HSCs). In the present study, the effects of Ex-4 on GLUT4 expression were determined in the... -
The Pathophysiologic Roles of TRPM7 Channel
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2014, Vol.18 No.1 2 15-23 (9 pages)
Transient receptor potential melastatin 7 (TRPM7) is a member of the melastatin-related subfamily and contains a channel and a kinase domain. TRPM7 is known to be associated with cell proliferation, survival, and development. It is ubiquitously expressed, highly permeable to Mg2+ and Ca2+, and its channel activity is negatively regulated by free Mg2+ and Mg-complexed nucleotides. Recent studies have investigated the relationships between TRPM7 and a number of diseases. TRPM7 regulates cell... -
Effect of Neurosteroid Modulation on Global Ischaemia-Reperfusion-Induced Cerebral Injury in Mice
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2013, Vol.17 No.6 2 485-492 (8 pages)
The present study was designed to investigate the putative effect of neurosteroid modulation on global ischaemia-reperfusion-induced cerebral injury in mice. Bilateral carotid artery occlusion followed by reperfusion, produced a significant rise in cerebral infarct size along with impairment of grip strength and motor coordination in Swiss albino mice. Administration of carbamazepine (16 mg/kg, i.p.) before global cerebral ischaemia significantly attenuated cerebral infarct size and improved the... -
Stem Cells in Drug Screening for Neurodegenerative Disease
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 9 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2012, Vol.16 No.1 1 1-9 (9 pages)
Because the average human life span has recently increased, the number of patients who are diagnosed with neurodegenerative diseases has escalated. Recent advances in stem cell research have given us access to unlimited numbers of multi-potent or pluripotent cells for screening for new drugs for neurodegenerative diseases. Neural stem cells (NSCs) are a good model with which to screen effective drugs that increase neurogenesis. Recent technologies for human embryonic stem cells (ESCs) or induced... -
Mechanisms of Selective Antimicrobial Activity of Gaegurin 4
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 10 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2009, Vol.13 No.1 7 39-48 (10 pages)
Gaegurin 4 (GGN4), an antimicrobial peptide isolated from a Korean frog, is five times more potent against Gram-positive than Gram-negative bacteria, but has little hemolytic activity. To understand the mechanism of such cell selectivity, we examined GGN4-induced K+ efflux from target cells, and membrane conductances in planar lipid bilayers. The K+ efflux from Gram-positive M. luteus (2.5Ռg/ml) was faster and larger than that from Gram-negative E. coli (75Ռg/ml), while... -
Calcium Ion Dynamics after Dexamethasone Treatment in Organotypic Cultured Hippocampal Slice
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 8 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2005, Vol.9 No.6 8 363-370 (8 pages)
It is imperative to analyse brain injuries directly in real time, so as to find effective therapeutic compounds to protect brain injuries by stress. We established a system which could elucidate the real time Ca2 dynamics in an organotypic cultured hippocampal slice by the insults of artificial stress hormone, dexamethasone. The real time Ca2 dynamics could continuously be detected in cornus ammonis 3 (CA3) of the organotypic hippocampus for 8 hours under confocal microscopy. When... -
Double-stranded RNA Induces Inflammatory Gene Expression in Schwann Cells: Implication in the Wallerian Degeneration
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 6 Pages
The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology 2004, Vol.8 No.5 3 253-258 (6 pages)
The transcripts of TLR2, 3, 4, and 9 were detected on the primary Schwann cells as well as on iSC. The stimulation of iSC with poly (I:C), a synthetic ligand for the TLR3, induced the expression of TNF-α and RANTES. In addition, poly (I:C) stimulation induced the iNOS expression and nitric oxide secretion in iSC. These results suggest that the TLRs may be involved in the inflammatory activation of Schwann cells, which is observed during Wallerian degeneration after a peripheral nerve injury.
