대구 팔공산 桐華寺에는 조선후기에 조성된 고승 진영이 31점 남아있다. 이 중 현재 보물 제1505호로 지정된 〈사명당 진영〉은 화면 좌측(向右) 하단에“嘉慶元年丙辰…”(1796)이라는 묵서가 남아 있어 그 제작연대를 추정할 수 있는 작품으로 주목되어 왔다. 하지만 화면의 구성이나 색감 등이 18세기 후반의 진영 양식과는 전혀 다른 古式으로 표현되어 있어, 학계에서는 17세기 후반설, 1796년 하한설, 1796년설 등 그 제작연대에 대해 다양한 학설들이 제기되었다. 본 연구에서는 〈사명당 진영〉의 도상과 함께 세부표현에서...
