노화과정은 활성산소(reactive oxygen species, ROS)와 우리 체내 항산화 능력 간의 불균형으로 인한 산화스트레스(oxidative stress)와 밀접한 관련이 있는 것으로 알려져 있다[1]. 산화스트레스는 심혈관계 질환, 호흡기, 근골격계 질환 같은 노인성 질환과 수명에 영향을 미친다[1,2]. 산화스트레스는 다양한 요인에 의해 발생하는 것으로 보고되었으며[1,2], 그 중 호모시스테인은 산화과정을 통해 동맥혈관에 급격한 산화스트레스를 유발하여[3] 동맥경화증의 독립적인 위험인자로 알려져 있다. -
