A review of angiographic studies of 24 injured patients suspected of having sustained arterial trauma was done to evaluate the angiographic findings and correlate angiographic abnormalities with operative findings. Between March 1986 and April 1990, 24 patients were evaluated angiographically for suspected extremity or torso arterial injury. There were 21 male and three female patients, 4-74 years of age(mean, 33 years). In 20 patients, operations were done and surgical findings were compared with angiographic findings. In anatomic distribution, upper and lower extremities were the most common(67%), and the major angiographic abnormalities were occlusion(13 cases), focal luminal widening(5 cases), arteriovenous fistula(3 cases), luminal filling defect(2 cases) and extravasation(1 case). In 11 cases of occlusion where surgery was done, the were transection with thrombus(8 cases), intimal tear with thrombus(2 cases) and thrombus from chronic trauma(1 cse). It was difficult to differentiate the cause of occlusion angiographically, but in most of the occlusion cases which involved a frature nearby( 7/8 )the cause was transection with cecondary thrombus formation. Angiography still remains as the gold standard for safe and accurate evaluation of injured patients with suspected arterial trauma.
