Drosophila melanogaster와 이 종의 근연종인 D. simulans 및 D. virilis를 대상으로 종의 분화정도와 종형성 과정을 알아보기 위한 연구의 일환으로 5가지 제한효소를 사용하여mtDNA의 절단 인식부위를 분석하였다. 그 결과 D. melanogaster와 D. simulans 및 D. virilis의 전체 genome size는 각각 18.9kbp, 19.0 kbp 그리고 15.3kbp인 것으로 나타났으며 2종류의 제한효소를 동시에 처리하여 cleavage map을 작성하여 보았을 때, D. melanogaster와 D. simulans는 유사한 절단 인식부위를 나타내는 반면 이들 2종과 D. virilis는 다른 인식부위를 갖는 것으로 나타났다.
Mitochondrial DNA(mtDNA) polymorphism of three species of genus Drosophila(D. melanogaster, D. simulans and D. virilis) was investigated. mtDNA was isolated from the three Drosophila species, and analysed by five restriction endonucleases. Total number of base pairs in mtDNA molecules of D. melanogaster, D. simulans and D. virilis was estimated to be 18.9kbp, 19.0kbp and 15.3kbp, respectively. In comparison of cleavage map of the three species, it could be confirmed that D. melanogaster and D. simulans were close to each other, but D. virilis was otherwise.
