포식어를 이용하여 질병매개 모기의 생물학적 방제를 위한 기초조사로 포식어인 버들치 (Moroco oxycephalus), 미꾸리 (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus)의 실내 포식실험과 수원소재 대학부속농장의 논에서 야외방사에 의한 구제효과를 조사한 결과는 다음과 같다(1992-1993). 1. 실내실험 (1) 포식어 버들치의 크기별 포식실험에서 성어(6cm)는 1일 평균 빨간집모기 (Culex. pipiens pallens) 3령유충 210.5마리를 포식하였고, 중국얼룩날개모기 (Anopheles sinensis)는 167.9마리, 작은빨간집모기 (Culex tritaeniorhynchus)는 160.0마리의 각기 높은 포식력을 나타내었다. (2) 미꾸리의 크기별 포식실험에서 성어(15cm)는 1일 평균 빨간집모기 3령유충을 168.4마리, 미성숙 미꾸리는 112.7-144.0마리를 포식하였으며, 1, 2 및 4마리의 다른 방사구로 실험한 결과, 1일 평균 각각 129.5, 253.8과 320.6마리를 취식하는 높은 포식력을 나타내었고, 대조구의 모기유충의 치사율은 1일 평균 1.2마리였다. 2. 소규모야외실험 (1) 수원 소재 대학부속농장의 논에서 포식어 버들치의 1, 2, 4 및 8마리/$m^2$의 다른 방사구로 처리한 결과, 1주 후에 각각 43.6, 50.4, 63.6 및 71.0%의 중국얼룩날개모기의 구제율을 나타내었으며, 그 후 모기의 완전구제를 이룬 방사구는 4, 8마리/$m^2$로 처리한 논이었으나, 2마리/$m^2$의 방사구로 처리한 논에서는 71.6%의 모기구제를 나타내었다. (2) 미꾸리의 야외실험은 2, 4마리/$m^2$의 방사구로 처리하여 대조구와 비교하였다. 2마리/$m^2$의 비율로 방사한 논에서는 4주와 8주 후에 34.6%와 35.3%의 중국얼룩날개모기 구제율을 나타내었으며, 4마리/$m^2$로 방사한 논에서는 53.8%와 55.2%의 구제율을 나타내었다. 본 실험 결과, 실내 및 소규모 야외 포식실험에서 버들치, 미꾸리의 높은 포식력은 모기 유충구제에 큰 역할을 할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라, 이중 미꾸리의 경추 모기 유충구제는 물론 양식으로서도 농가 소득의 향상에 도움을 줄 것으로 사료된다.
A series of assessments on the biological control potential with the common fat minnow (Moroco oxycephalus) and oriental weatherfish (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) were conducted against Culex pipiens pallens, Culex tritaeniorhynchus and Anopheles sinensis larvae both in the laboratory and semifield rice paddies of University Experimental Station in Suwon from July through September, 1992-1993. In the laboratory, the higher predation rate by one mature fish (Moroco oxycephalus) against Cx. pipiens pallens larvae was on the average of 210.5 larvae per day, followed by An. sinensis and Cx. tritaeniorhynchus as 167.9 and 160.0, respectively. A mature fish of Misgurnus consumed Cx. pipiens on the average of 168.4 third instar larvae per day; an immature fish consumed in range of 112.7-144.0 larvae per day. Predation of the fish at 3 different release rates of 1, 2, and 4 fish per aquarium resulted in 129.5, 253.8 and 320.6 3rd-instar mosquito larvae, respectively. In semi-field assessment, Moroco oxycephalus at the release rates of 1, 2, 4, and 8 fish per $m^2$ resulted in 43.6%, 50.4%, 63.6% and 71.8% An. sinensis control after 1 week respectively; subsequent, biocontrol rate increased to 100.0% in higher release rate groups (4 fish/$m^2$, 8 fish/$m^2$), however, in a substantial control of 71.6% was obtained from 2 fish per $m^2$ in 3 weeks after the fish introduction. Misgurnus anguillicaudatus introduction at 2 fish/$m^2$ produced 34.6% and 35.3% An. sinensis reduction in ca. 4 and 8 weeks respectively; while 4 fish per $m^2$ yielded substantial biological control against An. sinensis, Cx. pipiens pallens and Cx. tritaeniorhynchus combined, by 53.8% and 55.2% in ca. 4 and 8 weeks in comparision with that of control paddies.
