한국 중남부에 서식하는 다년생 박과 덩쿨식물인 하눌타리(Trichosanthes kirilowii) 씨앗인 괄루인(Trichosanthis fructus)으로부터 열처리, 황산 암모늄 분별침전, DEAE Sephadex 이온교환 크로마토그래피, Sephadex G-200 겔 크로마토그래피 등으로 렉틴을 정제하여 성질을 조사하였다. 렉턴은 2.3%의 수율로 60.4배 정제되었다. 겔 크로마토그래피로 측정한 분자량은 약 67,000 dalton, SDS-PAGE로 측정한 분자량은 34,000과 35,000 dalton의 두가지로 나타났으므로 이 렉틴은 dimer로 판단된다. Trichosanthis fructus 렉턴(TFL)은 galactose, ${eta}$-lactose, ${alpha}$-lactose 등의 당과 $Hg^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Pb^{2+}$ 등의 금속이온에 의하여 활성이 저해되었고 $40^{circ}C$에서 15분간 유지시킨 결과 활성의 80%가 남았다.
Trichosanthis fructus Lectin (TFL) was partially purified by ammonium sulfate fractionation, heat treatment, DEAE-Sephadex ion exchange chromatography and Sephadex G-200 gel chromatography. The molecular weight of TFL was estimated by gel filtration and SDS-PAGE. The Molecular size of the lectin was determined to be 67,000 dalton, which was composed of two subunits having molecular weights of 34,000 and 35,000 dalton, respectively. The effect of sugars and metal ions on the hemagglutinating activity of lectin was also examined. The hemagglutinating activity of the lectin was inhibited by some sugars (${eta}$-Lactose, ${alpha}$-Lactose, D-(+)-Galactose) and metal ions ($Hg^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Pb^{2+}$).
