본 연구는 전자도서관 환경에서 이용자들이 다수의 데이터베이스를 개별적으로 검색하는 경우(분리 인터페이스)와 통합적으로 검색하는 경우에 (통합 인터페이스) 이용자 선호도, 이용자 만족도, 검색 효율성과 정보 검색 행위를 비교 분석하였다. 두 시스템, 분리 인터페이스와 통합 인터페이스를 비교하기 위해 TREC(Text REtrieval Conference)의 데이터베이스와 검색 질문 중 일부를 이용하여 Rutgers 대학에서 실험이 실시됐다. 연구 결과 이 이용자 그룹은 통합 인터페이스 보다 분리 인터페이스를 선호하고 분리 인터페이스의 검색 결과에 더 만족하는 것으로 나타났다. 또 이 이용자 그룹에게는 분리 인터페이스의 검색 효율성이 통합 인터페이스의 검색 효율성 보다 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 결과는 통합 인터페이스가 분리 인터페이스보다 바람직할 것이라는 데이터베이스 통합분야의 일반적 전제와 상반된다고 할 수 있다. 본 연구는 분산 환경에서 이용자와 정보 시스템 간의 상호 작용에 대한 이해를 넓히고 전자 도서관 환경에서의 시스템 개발에 시사점을 제시한다는 데 그 의의가 있다고 할 수 있다.
