This study examined how three different conditional interaction modes affected the foreign language learner’s participation in the subsequent oral discussions. The first condition was the subsequent discussions that were all oral, the second condition was involved in the sequence of asynchronous computer discussion and oral discussion and the last one was in the pairs of synchronous computer discussion and oral discussion. The Gini coefficients were calculated in each discussion to know which interaction mode exhibited relatively more equal participation. The average of language length per total turn-takings and language complexity was also explored with total words, total t-units, and total turns in each discussion. The results indicated that the synchronous computer discussion affected oral discussions in the third condition more than in any other condition more than in any other conditions for Gini coefficient, and that the asynchronous computer discussion influenced the oral discussions in the second condition more than in any other condition for language complexity. In conclusion, this study suggested that the more participation in computer-mediated discussion a language learner can have, the better language learning he or she may foster.
