This study aims to look into the architectural characteristics of the Gajaeul district, which area is located at Moraenae of Seoul and are composed of multiple purpose housing, commercial shops and apartment buildings for the urban poor, built around 1960s. The district is composed of buildings that are built from scratch by the urban poor without help from registered architects, but they encompass the essential living qualities of the period. After the Korean war, there have been numerous districts built in this fashion and there seems to be a consistent similarities between them. But currently the buildings are being torn down due to urban redevelopment plans without any studies or historical considerations. This study aims to survey and analyze these buildings in the district to define the characteristics and search for methods to preserve and find application to recycle these buildings.
