The purpose of this study is to examine a preliminary study to seek for planning method that enlarge the utilization of external space in apartment complex. This study makes investigation into present condition, alterations and the requisites for improvement of external Space. The questionnaire survey and evaluation of this study was obtained from experts. The results of the research are summarized as follows. 1)The planning elements of external Space in apartment complex are divided into three parts, such as front entrance of multi-family housing, additional facilities and welfare facilities. Additional facilities are classified into landscape facilities, street facilities and parking facilities, and welfare facilities are divided into aged leisure facilities, public facilities, Sports Facilities, and playing facilities. 2)The availability of welfare facilities is the highest among component elements of external space(front entrance of multi-family housing, additional facilities and welfare facilities). In various facilities, however, the using of rest facilities, aged leisure facilities and public facilities, are the highest. 3)The factors affecting utilization of external space are leisure behavior and a creative design. thus, leisure behavior and a creative design are necessarily needed for architectural planning. Also, the plan reflecting the needs of residents can be an effective method to improve the utilization of external space. 4)The using rate of play facilities and park is highest compare with the other facilities. However, Play facilities and a park space should be reformed for activating availability.
