The purpose of this study is to consider the conditions for the desirable organization of the intermediate territory in the multi-family housing complexes in urban area where men can adapt himself well. The precondition for this is firstly, the intermediate territory should be clearly defined and secondly, each defined territory should be integrated to the whole in the hierarchical order. Each territory is defined by a boundary and connected by a gate. Various forms of boundaries and gates for the intermediate territory and the mechanism for the hierarchical organization of the intermediate territory are analysed for the contemporary housing. Similar research is done for the korean traditional architecture which is to be compared. The results are as follows : 1) There are various kinds of boundaries of different character and scale such as roads, buildings and walls. Boundaries can be classified as a linear boundary and a separate boundary. Various kinds of boundaries need to be used together. 2) Various kinds of gates such as pilotti, arches, gap between buildings and posts need to be used to set up the relationships between territories. 3) The hierarchical differentiation is proceeded under the vertical hierarchical order and under the sequential hierarchical order. The intermediate territory in housing complexes shows three steps in the hierarchical composition. 4) An intermediate territory is classified as the dispersed type, the linear type and the enclosed type according to the shape, character and the form of the boundary of a territory. 5) The various types of an intermediate territory and the various form of a boundary and a gate need to be adapted together to make various kinds of intermediate territory to fulfill all the needs of the residents.
