The purpose of this study is to analyze the relation between how to plan rooms and how to use the rooms in the residential spaces. In that planning process, the relation between the room as a whole and its elements like furniture was focused by analyzing the home planning guide books between the mid-nineteenth century and the mid-twentieth century. Since the house was recognized as the intimate space for the modern private family, the rooms have been aimed to a right place for family activity. However, it has been varied depending on the character of rooms how restrictedly defined the uses of the rooms and the activities in the rooms are. The diningroom in the mid-nineteenth century which had the most restrictedly defined purpose and the distinctive family activity, eating, showed the close relation between the room as a whole and its elements reflecting that activity. On the other hand, in the case of the room which had multiple purpose and various kinds of activity not to defined well, the characters of the elements were detailed and the relation between the room and its elements were weaken.
