International societies are under pressure to reduce building energy consumption. In this context, systems and technologies to calculate building energy loads are developing actively. On the other hand, as BIM (Building Information Modeling) is applied widely to design and construction as well as building energy loads analysis. This paper proposes a method to extract geometry and location data of building elements from IFC file that is created by BIM tool so that the data extracted data can be used directly for building energy loads analysis. To that end, we analyzed the data required by DOE-2 engine and the corresponding data in BIM-IFCXML file. And then, we mapped the two data sets on each other so as to confirm the way of using IFCXML file directly for energy load analysis. In order to validate the proposed method, an exemplary case study was conducted; On one hand, a set of data was extracted from a sample BIM model and it was used to write a INP file, which is a input file format of DOE-2 engine. On the other hand, another INP file was written using eQUEST, which is a widely known software used for building energy analysis. The comparative analysis confirms that the two INP files tally with each other. Therefore, we can conclude that the proposed method can be well used to automatically extract the required data for building energy load analysis from BIM-IFCXML files.
