전통적으로 데이터는 입력과 출력 같은 계산의 부분으로만 인식되어 왔다. 하지만 연구자에게 가장 중요한 것은 계산 자체 보다는 데이터이다. 데이터는 신뢰성 높은 내용을 안정적이고 편리하게 보관하고 활용할 수 있는 방법으로 저장되어야 하다. 여기서 계산은 데이터 생산을 위한 방법으로만 간주될 수 있으므로 과학자는 계산보다는 데이터 자체에 더 집중할 수 있게 된다. 연구에서 전형적인 데이터의 활용은 분석과 후속 데이터의 생성인데 각 분야 별로 많이 사용하는 프로그램이 존재하므로 프로그램의 수정 없이 데이터에 접근할 수 있는 방법을 제공하는 것도 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 액티브 폴더라는 원격 파일 시스템 서비스를 제안한다. 액티브 폴더는 앞에서 기술한 점들을 충족하는 데이터 모델을 정의하여 웹 서비스로 구현한 부분과 이 모델을 레거시 파일 시스템에 폴더와 파일 형태로 사상되어 나타나도록 하고 이 모델에서 필요한 액션을 모두 레거시 파일 시스템 명령으로 변환시키는 클라이언트 부분으로 구성되어 있다. 이를 기반으로 데이터 중심의 문제해결환경을 레거시 소프트웨어만 가지고 구현할 수 있다.
Data are traditionally considered as a part of computing such as input and output. However, the most important thing for the researcher is data rather than computing itself. Data are therefore required to be stored in the way of securing stability and convenience in keeping and utilizing of highly reliable contents. In this sense, computing is only considered as a method to reproduce or create data. If so, scientist can focus on producing and utilizing of data rather than stuffs related with computing directly. Most typical activities using data are analysing or producing new data for the next stage. Because popular softwares usually exist for the activity in each area of science and technology, it is also important to provide the way of accessing data by the legacy software without any modification. In this paper, remote file system service called Active-Folder is suggested. Active-Folder consist of web service part implemented on data model which is fulfilled the issues described above, and client part which map the model on files and folders of legacy file system, and converts actions in model to commands of legacy file system. Data-centric problem solving environment now can be implemented with only legacy software on Active-Folder.
