To broaden perspectives of environmental education towards lifelong learning, this study explored common characteristics and motivations of three ecological adult learning communities. The three communities in this study, "Green Learning Community", "Earthian Readers Club" and "Buddhism Reading Community", have been autonomously structured on the theme of the environment and ecology and they have had gatherings consistently. Based upon the logic of qualitative methodology, the researcher collected data through participatory observations and individual interviews, and then described and analyzed the characteristics of three communities. Throughout the study, some common grounds among the three communities have emerged. While they share a "Bangol" inclination with which the members of them tend to confront the predominant values, they represent such inclination in moderate ways with liberal ways of thinking and with focus on inner-growth. It can also be interpreted that such characteristics may result from self-reflections on their earlier experiences of rigid cultures pervasive in activism. This study also found that there are some limitations which discourage further development of the communities.
