The purpose of this article is to explore the significance of Robert Bruce’s heart burial in context. He was a king of Scotland in the early fourteenth century, who led the first independence war of Scotland. At a deadthbed, he requested to send his heart after his death to the Crusade to fight against the enemy of God, and to bury it at Melrose Abbey. In fact, the heart burial was popular to the Upper class in Europe during the twelfth and thirteenth century, in the relationship with the development of the burial of body fragments. The burial of body parts including that of heart was relevant to the treatment of the corpse. Therefore, to investigate the significance of Robert Bruce’s heart burial, this article examines firstly the treatment of the corpse in Medieval Europe, and secondly the custom of the separate burial for heart. In the end, this article explores why Robert Bruce sent his heart to the Crusade and he chose Melrose as the burial place for his heart.
