시각자료를 점역하는 데 있어서 지침을 따를 수 있는 ‘교과용 도서 및 교육용 자료 점역 출판 매뉴얼’이 발간되었다. 본 연구의 목적은 출판 매뉴얼의 준수성 여부를 분석하고 시사점을 밝히는 데 있다. 고등학교 사회․문화교과서 시각자료 443건을 매뉴얼의 유형별 지침에 따라 점자교과서 4권을 분석하였다. 시각자료를 표, 그래프, 도표, 그림, 사진, 만화, 지도의 유형으로 분류하여 점역표현 방식과 준수성을 분석하였다. 표와 그래프는 생략 없이 모두 점역되었으며, 도표는 주로 텍스트로 풀었다. 점역은 되었으나, 표와 그래프의 기능이 나타나지 않거나, 도표의 그래픽 표현이 부족하고, 그림, 사진, 만화, 지도의 이미지 생략을 점역자주로 밝히지 않아서 매뉴얼을 준수하지 않은 경우가 많았음을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 매뉴얼을 준수하여 표의 박스선을 점역한다든지, 점역자주를 활용하는 방안 등에 대하여 논의하였다. 이러한 점은 점역교정사의 연수와 교과서 점역에 있어서 교사나 전문가의 참여를 시사한다.
‘Braille Translation Manual of Text Books and Educational Materials’ was published in order to provide guidelines for braille translation of visual materials. This study aimed to analyze compliance with the braille translation manual and its implications. The study analyzed 443 items of visual materials presented in 4 volumes of high school braille social-cultural study textbooks. The visual materials were categorized into tables, graphs, drawings, diagrams, pictures, cartoons, and maps and analyzed for the way of expressing braille translation and its compliance. All tables and graphs were completely translated into braille and diagrams were expressed as text explanations. Even though those were translated into braille, it was revealed that many cases did not comply to the manual. For example, the braille translation of tables or graphs did not serve an intended function; the translation of diagrams lacked of graphic expressions; the omission of images such as drawings, pictures, cartoons and maps lacked of annotation. Thus, this study discussed methods, which comply to the manual, to translate borders of tables or to utilize translator’s notes. This implies that teachers or experts need to participate in workshops for braille translation proofing reader and braille translation of textbooks.
