The hand washing of health care providers is very important in prevention of hospital acquired infection. In Cheju Halla University, a study was done to identify the differences in effectiveness of disinfections for surgical hand scrubbing according to the type of disinfectant. From June to July, 2011, the data were collected from 132 students and instructors to compare hand culture colony numbers before and after hand washing. This study compared the colony forming units and surgical hand rubbing by using general soap, alcohol gel (70V/V% Ethanol) and surgical hand scrubbing (7.5W/V% Povidone-iodine). Results showed the average number of colonies before washinge to be 31.58×103 CFU/mL, hand washing with general soap resulted in colonies with an average number of 25.58×103 CFU/mL, alcohol gel formulation hand washing resulted colonies with an average number of 17.27×103 CFU/mL and hand washing with surgical scrub resulted with an average number of 5.97×103 CFU/mL. Keeping hands clean through improved hand hygiene is one of the most important steps we can take to avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. In the prevention of viral diseases proper hand washing may be the most important thing we can do. Homes, schools, and communities by working together can spread awareness as the importance of hand washing.
