This study is a descriptive research to examine the effects of stress and loneliness of 450 college students on their binge eating behavior and provide the basic materials of counseling and health promotion programs. Data were collected from September 5 to 15, 2012 and the instruments used for research included UCLA Loneliness Scale (University of California, Los Angeles) made by Russell etc. (1980), stress coping questionnaire for college students developed by Choi Hae Rim (1986) and bulimia nervosa questionnaire developed by Smith and Thelen (1984) and revised by Thelen (1991) based on DSM-IV diagnosis criteria after revising and complementing these questionnaires. A total 415 responses were used for data analysis and analysis methods used were technical statistics, t-test, ANOVA, correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis. The results of the research were summarized as follows. 1) It was found that the average loneliness and binge eating behavior of college students by sex were higher in female students than in male students. 2) Stress and loneliness depending on academic year showed no significant difference and the binge eating behavior showed significant differences in the order of the first, third and second year. 3) The average of stress, loneliness and binge eating behavior depending on major was higher in health related departments, but there was no significant difference in the binge eating behavior. 4) Stress and loneliness showed extremely high positive correlations (r=0.977, p=0.000) and loneliness (r=-0.354, p=0.002) and stress (r=-0.358, p=0.001) had negative correlations with the binge eating behavior. 5) Variables affecting college students’ binge eating behavior were sex and stress and its explanatory power was 15.1%. As a result of the research, the binge eating behavior which is the major symptom of bulimia nervosa had a great correlation with sex and stress. Therefore, it is considered that health promotion programs to manage stress efficiently in female students showing bulimia nervosa or binge eating behavior would be required in colleges.
