Potentially Inappropriate Prescriptions (PIP) are defined as medications that have more risks than benefits and have a high risk of adverse drug reaction (ADR). PIP are a common problem in elderly patients and are associated with negative outcomes including a significant risk of adverse drug events, increased healthcare costs, and hospitalization that increases morbidity. Therefore the evaluation of elderly prescription is important for effective therapy and cost. Beers criteria is the most commonly screening tool of prescriptions for the elderly and currently updated. This screening tool is made up 53 medications divided into three groups. Whereas the STOPP criteria are organized by a physiological system and devised in the late 2000s. The researchers wrote that the STOPP criteria is more sensitive than the Beers criteria for identifying those potentially inappropriate medicines prescribed for the elderly. But However, because both of the criteria do not include over-the-counter medications or oriental herbs, this was considered a limitation to this study. Since there have been few reports dealing with the prevalence of PIP on the elderly, further research is required to develop a new prescription monitoring tool that is appropriate for Korean older adults.
