The purpose of this study was to understand Chinese marriage immigrant mothers’ child-rearing experiences
in Korea. To achieve this goal, a qualitative research design was applied and a total of ten Chinese marriage
immigrant mothers with young children who live in Gwangju and Jeonnam area was interviewed about their
child-rearing experiences. By using Colaizzi’s phenomenological analysis method, eighteen themes, three
categories, and six theme clusters were identified. The three theme categories of child-rearing experience include
‘enjoy’, ‘difficulties’, and ‘endeavor’. This result suggests that child-rearing experiences of Chinese marriage
immigrant mothers involve both positive(enjoyment) and negative aspects(difficulties). Second, Chinese marriage
immigrant mothers experience a double torture of general child-rearing difficulties and the difficulties from
marriage immigrant. Finally, Chinese marriage immigrant mothers are making diverse efforts to raise their
Korean children in their multicultural family.
