Symbol of a meaning are unable to be verbalized completely and a symbol conceives meanings. As an image is mostly composed of materials transcending the conscious, it is expressed variously in folk cultures including mythologies, folktales, and folk games. This study will examine horse symbols through mythologies, folktales, folklore, relics, and traditional games experienced in Korean culture and life style. It also attempts to understand horse symbols appearing in Japanese, Chinese, Mongolian and Central Asian, and European mythologies and fairy tales. Horse symbolism is found in Korean myths and fairy tales: shynmo to announce the birth of the founder of a country as an envoy from the sky; mystical creature; loyalty to owner; guide of buried person’s spirit riding on its back; and folk faith to revere horses like horse day and policies on horses. In Korean culture, a horse is regarded as a symbol of an auspicious and mystical animal in Korean’s life and thoughts. Also, it is similar in Japanese and Chinese mythologies and fairy tales. A horse in Mongolia and Central Asia is intimate with people as much as identified with human. In European and Greek myth, a horse is a symbol of sun, representing brilliance of a horse and unconscious energy. Also horse-related games are handed down in both East and West. Traditional games in a group are not an invention from the conscious, but have symbolic significance as remnants of primitive situation coming from shamanistic ritual. The horse in traditional games was a creature to symbolize the supreme power and capacity. The study on horse symbolism is appropriate for amplifying both universality shown extensively across eastern and western cultures, and uniqueness of local culture, and tells that a horse is regarded as a close and sacred creature to people in all over the world as an important symbol of human culture.
