The purpose of this study is to suggest some points for discussion and plans in
applying multicultural social welfare education to the social welfare curriculum at a
college level to cope with the recently accelerated multicultural phenomenon in South
Korea. For this purpose, not only the theories of multicultural education but all so
literature concerning the cases related to the need of multicultural education at a college
level and the relevant systems or legislations of South Korea were reviewed.
It is needed to provide the subject of multicultural social welfare, which has been
managed as a non-statutory subject in the social welfare curriculum since 2008, as a
statutory optional subject, include it in the social welfare curriculum, and to practice
multicultural education as well in practicing social welfare with the objective of
reinforcing capacity for multicultural practice in the social welfare curriculum at a college.
It is also necessary to use multicultural media to present convergence education models
of multicultural social welfare education for immigrants and foreign residents, revise
relevant legislations for activating multicultural education, and develop and distribute
multicultural convergence education models for activating the practical area of social
welfare through association with multicultural institutions.
