This paper aims to prove the close relationship between spiritual experiences and social action. It first explores the relationship between prayer and action, which is one of the important issues in the area of Christian spirituality. Especially, Susan Rakoczy’s fresh understanding of mystical experiences makes it easy to grasp how one who has mystical experiences organically goes to the frontier of social action in his/her situation. Then, this paper deals with the spiritual experiences of Francis of Assisi, asking how his experiences relate to his participation to social action, serving the poor. In sum, this paper attempts to answer this question, what motivated him to participate in social action so earnestly?
