This study attempted to explore the meaning of ‘sign based character education’ from the aesthetic education, particularly focusing on a view of ‘sign’ system that is compounded with theory of hermeneutics. Human beings are naturally able to perceive the world from the aesthetic perspective, becoming very active to read the meaning from the objects which simultaneously project particularly code to him. From the aesthetic perspective this process of ‘coding and decoding’ between the humans and the world is naturally sensitive with feeling of beauty and moral. By being able to read this meaning with active manner, humans become eventually a real human being with the character of humans. Character of human beings are supposed to be originally friendly with the caring mind, but in these days, this characteristics needs to be educated because of too much rational based education which put great emphasis on logical thinking rather than ‘feelings’. This study suggests that aesthetics with emphasis on the ‘otherness theory’ would be the alternative way to support character education that promote the students’ inner sense which is ultimately seen to lead the moral behavior from the heart.
