The current article aims to investigate the core characteristics and meaning of ‘art’ as it is currently used in Art Therapy, which incorporates art as part of therapeutic treatment. It considers the differences between the concept of ‘art’ in Art Therapy and ‘art’ as a form of aesthetic expression, and argues that the two are distinct as ‘art’ used in Art Therapy is more specialized. A client of Art Therapy experiences a process of exploration, expression and integration through artistic activity with the Art Therapist, and the current study seeks to further contemplate the mediatory role of the languages used, namely, the imagery (which is the main language) and spoken (which facilitates the visual) languages. This is hoped to provide an opportunity to highlight ‘art’ as a distinct concept and main facet of Art Therapy, and furthermore present a basis on which discussions of Art Therapy theory and philosophy may advance and continue to develop as a field of practice and study.
