This study measured the greenhouse gas emissions occurring from the incineration process at an incineration plant in case of recycling the waste heat collected vs. in case of not reusing it. This study was based on the current status data of household waste resource recovery facilities across the whole country, published annually by the Ministry of Environment from 2010 to 2014 for five years. For more accurate measurement, seasonal trends in increase and decrease were analyzed. In case of recycling the waste heat collected, the method of calculation used was from Local Government Greenhouse Gas Emissions Calculation Guideline Waste Section [Attachment 2,4,3] published by the Korea Environmental Corporation and in case of general incineration without collecting waste heat, the greenhouse gas emissions were calculated at Tier 2, which level applied the national emission coefficient to the formula used at a waste incineration plant of IPCC 2006 G/L. In addition to waste, to keep initial ignition/catch fire and temperature constant, fossil fuel are either constantly or intermittently put into the incinerator. As a result of measuring the greenhouse gas emissions, the 5-year cumulative emission was 9,111,177.97tCO2eq if considering the waste heat collected and 13,194,609.51tCO2eq if not considering the waste heat collected. When considering the waste heat collected, there occurred a lot of errors in calculation results, indicating that there was an error exceeding 100% of heat recovery rate at some incineration plants as a result of calculating the heat recovery rate, an important factor for calculation. This comes to a conclusion that in case of considering the waste heat collected, the greenhouse gas emissions calculation result has a significantly low reliability. It is considered that most of the domestic incineration plants need to improve or develop calculation methods and data acquisition methods suitable for domestic situations when considering the recycling of waste heat.
