The aim of the paper is current status of the treatment and volume reduction for
metallic waste generated from decommissioning project. In Korea, two decommissioning
projects have been carried out owing to the retiring of nuclear research facilities
(KRR-1 & KRR-2) and a uranium conversion plant (UCP). More than 400 tons of
radioactive metal waste was generated during the decommissioning project. For the
purpose of the volume reduction and self-disposal, KAERI was selected melt
decontamination technology using high frequency induction furnace with 350kg/batch.
The decommissioning metal waste was melted for self-disposal and volume reduction
by an induction furnace. Melt decontamination facilities and technology can be used
for decontamination and volume reduction of wastes generated from other facilities in
Korea.
