SungjaeSupil(惺齋手筆) ToegyeseonsaengSeo(退溪先生書, SSTS)
that has been preserved in the head family house of Sungjae(惺齋)
Gumlansu(琴蘭秀. 1530-1604) is a precious material in which
Toegye’s letters and poems are collected, which were originally
sent to Sungjae, one of the disciples of Toegye. It is construed that
Sungjae himself transcribed the original works and sent to the
publication office when the collection and first publication of the
ToegyeJip退溪集 was promoted and was returned back to him after
the compilation of the JungchoBon(中草本) ToegyeseonsaengJip(退
溪先生集, JBTJ). So to speak, SSTS was used as a Jobon(祖本) for
the formation of JBTJ which had played as the Mobon(母本) of
several Jeongbon(定本, authentic versions) of the ToegyeJip(退溪
集) since the first publication. In particular, at the publication of
the Sokjip(續集) it is inferred to serve as a Jeobon底本 with some
evidences. Through it we are able to secure the reliable data on
the Toegye’s works, and also can deepen our understandings on
the formation process of Jeongbon(定本, authentic versions) of
ToegyeJip(退溪集). Moreover, it contained three pieces of unknown
poetry of Toegye which are not printed publically till now.
